2. Wondering Who’s Watching - October 8, 2012

from fourthwaycult.net/wholeness.html link found on page 129:
‘Conclusion
. . . One case involves losing oneself, repressing and disowning parts of oneself, creating a narrowed self which is less than the sum of the parts. The healthier alternative involves transcending one’s normal sense of self by including even more than one’s individual characteristics.

Wilber’s approach makes these distinctions obvious. The spectrum model clearly demonstrates that the students in the NAW and other Fourth Way cults are taught to regress into less mature states of development, all the while imagining that they are evolving into more spiritual beings.’

3. Ames Gilbert - October 8, 2012

Joseph Nachumovitch (#129-209 or thereabouts),
you said, “If I had not been in the School, I would now be living most of my life in the state of imagination, with wrong values, and without any real understanding of the Bible.”

In my day, there was little said about the Bible. Now there are the Keys to the Bible, and experts in those keys, such as Benjamin Yudin, who even has his own website (mysticisma.com). Of course, there are none so expert as Burton and Asaf Braverman, who invented those Keys (‘rediscovered’, in FoF-speak). Is that what you mean by “real understanding” of the Bible? Please share, I am eager to learn.

Also, I’d be glad to know more about how you are living most of your life out of the state of imagination. And more about the values you learned in the Fellowship of Friends.

If you could avoid your signature one-liners (à la Burton), and actually give stupids like me some real actionable information, I’d be grateful.

4. WhaleRider - October 8, 2012

Good point, Ames.

A person living their lives without imagination ought to have the bandwidth to be able to talk about it, in less than imaginary ways.

5. Joseph Nachumovitch - October 8, 2012

Ames, I admit that I don’t know what I would have learned from another teacher or in another school, so perhaps my words could have been better thought out. However, the idea of being out of imagination is too simple (as opposed to complicated, rather than as opposed to difficult) to be usefully expanded upon. The values that I learned were ones connected to developing tendencies that I would want to take into another lifetime and controlling ones that I wouldn’t. The Bible ‘keys’ did not interest me. What I learned was to be open to the non-literal meanings of the Bible, of which, as the Hasidic scholars have always known, there are an infinite number.

6. Guru Free Zone - October 8, 2012

“…developing tendencies that I would want to take into another lifetime…”

I suggest you shift your concern to the “tendencies” you’re taking with you in this “lifetime.” One of those tendencies is the need to recite ready-made, pre-digested buzzwords that were given to you by a cult leader.

People know nothing of other lifetimes. Gurus know nothing about them. Followers know nothing. Whether other lifetimes exist or do not exist may be something beautiful to imagine as we look at the stars. But building our little earthly world around these theories — as though they are fact — is nothing but a fantasy. And it’s not necessarily a benign fantasy if we blindly follow a leader such as Burton.

7. nigel - October 8, 2012

I came across the beginning posts of this page on returning home from a long day at my studio – by myself for some of the time and also with my students. This afternoon, whilst walking my little West Highland Terrier, Ferdy, beside the mill stream up to the river Exe, I was pondering on yesterdays posts (no, Joseph – not in imagination – but – “Work, work your thoughts” – William Shakespeare – I also ponder on the difficulties my students have had throughout the day’s sessions and how we can approach their projects on their next visit – my aim is to be a facilitator – ‘one who makes easy’ – even awakening can be done in an efficient way, in my view – Burton’s Pain Factory has a lot to answer for, as being morally and emotionally corrupt -criminal!!!!!). I wanted to present the question to the blog today…..

“What did the Fellowship of Friends give me????? (and that I paid for in time, effort and lotsa money)”

Two posters have given me a clue…..

Ames has written about his own methods to arrive at conscience, in particular, whereas Joseph seemed to get absorbed, passively, into the culture…..

Who has something they can call their own now?????

Who has reached, or come near, the Self (which is the aim of all spiritual teachings)?????

Who would not agree that mindless, indiscriminate, presence will give you not much other than a dependence on a cult which thrives on conformity?????

(I was told by a student who was having difficulties with payments and had approached the payment ‘octave leader’, LK/LR/LT, that she should try not to be “The exception to the rule” – so the rule is – “Be on time with one’s payments and one will evolve”, is it?????)

WHAT IS BURTON’S GROUP OTHER THAN A BUNCH OF CONSCIOUS-SEEMING ROBOTS?????

“In order to do something, one must be something” – Goethe –
(and repeated in another form by Gurdjieff)

8. Shard_of_Oblivion - October 8, 2012

The most wonderful thing that strikes me about Christianity is forgiveness. I don’t find it emphasised in the same way in any other tradition. I think it is a special thing to forgive others, and also to be forgiven by others is a priceless gift.

#6 Nigel says:

“What did the Fellowship of Friends give me????? (and that I paid for in time, effort and lotsa money)”

I do feel I have some small benefits to show for it all.

Very occasionally these days I find myself in a situation where being able to concentrate on the matter in hand is useful. The most obvious is a musical concert where I don’t want to miss the beauty being presented, and in these limited circumstances I enjoy being able to reduce the chatter of the internal monologue.

When strong emotional shocks occur, I find that all those years of separating and non identifying gives me another coping mechanism, which is useful in the short term, though I think it is damaging if its use prevents me feeling the reality of my life.

I learned some good manners, and how to lay a table and put on a good dinner.

I guess it taught me humility, for example I can be a bit of a bore going on about how idiotic religious beliefs are, then my wife can prick my bubble, saying “But you spent all those years in that crazy cult”

But basically it was a waste of time and money.

in #5 Joseph Nachumovich says:
“What I learned was to be open to the non-literal meanings of the Bible, of which, as the Hasidic scholars have always known, there are an infinite number.”

Coincidently Einstein’s letter to Gutkind has just been put on Ebay for $3million, it gladdens my agnostic heart to see his thoughts given such valuation by the world marketplace. In that letter he says the following:
“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These subtilised interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text.”

11. Joseph Nachumovitch - October 9, 2012

As far as Einstein’s letter is concerned, such thoughts are not worth $3 million but are two-a-penny. So-called ‘intelligence’ obviously does not make anyone less blind to higher realities.

12. WhaleRider - October 9, 2012

Joseph N:
“So-called ‘intelligence’ obviously does not make anyone less blind to higher realities.”

That’s why faith is called blind?

13. Golden Veil - October 9, 2012

“Come down off your throne and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason Ive been waiting so long.
Somebody holds the key.

But Im near the end and I just aint got the time
And Im wasted and I can’t find my way home.”

14. Golden Veil - October 9, 2012

There’s a problem with Blind Faith…

I’m sorry, but that’s Eric Clapton singing this song, not Stevie Winwood as depicted in this video! The wonders of modern technology can make us all fools at times.

Sometimes things can sound good and look good but be unreal!

15. brucelevy - October 9, 2012

Nope, that’s Stevie singing.

16. brucelevy - October 9, 2012

Eric is playing the Tele on the left.

“That’s why faith is called blind?”

There is such a thing as blind faith, but faith is not ‘called blind’, as you put it. Your comments are becoming more and more mindless.

I don’t pretend to know anything of other lifetimes, I just find it to be a useful way of thinking, like thinking in terms of what I would want to be permanent and what I wouldn’t.

20. Joseph Nachumovitch

Didn’t you just previously say you learned in the FOF to be free from imagination?

The more I read your shit the more convinced I am that you know very little, if anything, about yourself, and you’re almost completely in imagination about the FOF, your own work and everything else outside of your very own weird cosmology.

22. nigel - October 9, 2012

I don’t like ‘mud-slinging’, here on the blog or anywhere else – I want to get at the very kernel and nucleus of our meaning in this life-time, before it and beyond – why we have dreams, and their meanings, why we have mighty aims in life, what we hope for ourselves and families and children and what legacies we hope to outlast our lives and leave something worthy for those yet to come…..Nigel.

“I know I am deathless,
I know this orbit of mine cannot be swept by a carpenter’s compass,
I know I shall not pass like a child’s carlacue cut with a burnt stick at night.
I know I am august,
I do not trouble my spirit to vindicate itself or be understood,
I see that the elementary laws never apologize,
(I reckon I behave no prouder than the level I plant my home by, after all.)
I exist as I am, that is enough,
If no other in the world be aware I sit content,
And if each and all be aware I sit content.
One world is aware and by far the largest to me, and that is myself,
And whether I come to my own today or in ten thousand or ten million years,
I can cheerfully take it now, or with equal cheerfulness I can wait.
My foothold is tenoned and mortised in granite,
I laugh at what you call dissolution,
And I know the amplitude of time.”

…..from ….. Walt Whitman – “Song of Myself”

23. Shard_of_Oblivion - October 9, 2012

#13 Golden Veil posts up some Blind Faith – thanks for that.

I seem to remember that sunny afternoon in Hyde Park way back when. We were all a bit disappointed that Cream had just split up, who were these guys Blind Faith, but hey once you’ve got Ginger Baker on drums, you have that crazy dervish edge of reality vibe. He looks 3 million years old, and somehow hits the drums like noone else. His daughter was a member of the London centre back in the 80s, and has those same high mongolian cheekbones.

24. Golden Veil - October 9, 2012

Bruce, I see them playing, and Stevie singing, but I thought the vocal sounded more like Clapton’s voice… but you’re probably more familiar with both artists than I am. I have, though, seen videos married to non original audios before on YouTube. I don’t have blind faith in what I see and hear, even when it’s Blind Faith!

25. Shard_of_Oblivion - October 9, 2012

Apropos Stevie Winwood, this song has helped me when I am in the very darkest depths of depression.

Also a little puzzle, the piano work is so beautiful I would think it was Stevie Winwood, but then the guitar solo is so totally cosmic that HAS to be Stevie Winwood, if he gets up from the piano and starts playing the guitar I can’t hear where;-)

26. Guru Free Zone - October 9, 2012

Nigel, beautiful poem from Whitman. “I know I am deathless… I know I am august.”

~ ~ ~

“mud slinging.”

Try just letting the mud sling. Don’t try to change it, or like it, or dislike it. Whitman compared himself to an oak tree in one poem — “rude, unbending, lusty.”

Some of that comes out in this wordpress page, too.

Many of these bloggers are like big brothers. They are impatient when their younger brother says something stupid or does something that’s ill advised, or that they know (from all of their experience) will simply lead to a lot of unnecessary pain and harmful consequences. Their impatience comes from love.

27. Tempus Fugit - October 9, 2012

I decided to resubmit my last post (just below) because it was near the end of the last page and I would like more people to see it. This is not because I am so smart, but I think my point is one that should be made. So here it is:

“I haven’t had much time to write recently, but I’ve tried to keep up with the many posts.

Thanks to everyone for an interesting and engaging discussion.

Today I just want to express my feeling of pity for Robert Burton, “I in the Sky,” and others trapped in this horrible, delusional cult. In my opinion those words sum up the FOF and Burton quite well – horrible and delusional.

I remember so well when I joined the FOF how exciting and full of promise the group and our future with it seemed.

Burton prophesized a great organization that would receive world acclaim and produce several “conscious beings.” The Fellowship was to become a great Ark of culture and it’s members the leaders of the New Age of mankind.

Instead, the FOF is a minor, insignificant group important only to a hard core center of “true believers” and a shifting ebb and flow of people seeking something better and then mostly leaving after not finding it.

No one else even notices and no one else cares. This sad truth is evident to any with just a little ability to step back and see it.”

So there it is, and please let me expand on my point a little more.

The various spiritual topics of the last few pages are important. Important to me anyway, and to a lot of you, and to millions of sensitive, curious people trying to understand the truth about God and life.

But the FOF is really a very minor “religious” group. To “I in the Sky” and other hard core members the FOF is seen completely out of proportion to it’s true place in society.

Over the years when I’ve told poeple about my life I have rarely met anyone who has even heard of the FOF – and this among people who are otherwise familiar with non mainstream and/or Eastern religious traditions and the groups that follow these paths in the U.S.

Walt Whitman (a favorite poet of myself and Nigel, and others) wrote a wonderful poem called “A Song of the Rolling Earth.” I recommend it and here is the first stanza:

A song of the rolling earth, and of words according,
Were you thinking that those were the words, those upright lines?
those curves, angles, dots?
No, those are not the words, the substantial words are in the ground
and sea,
They are in the air, they are in you.

So if we wrote “A song of the FOF, and of words according,” what would those words be?

In my opinion, in addition to horrible and delusional, they would include dishonest, corrupt, failure, and INSIGNIFICANT.

28. WhaleRider - October 10, 2012

Joseph N:
“I don’t pretend to know anything of other lifetimes, I just find it to be a useful way of thinking, like thinking in terms of what I would want to be permanent and what I wouldn’t.”

You say you find it useful “thinking” about something you claim to know nothing about…in terms of what you want or don’t want…to be.

…In a hypothetical reality.

Is that what you call “thinking”?

Don’t get me wrong, I think it is fine to use your imagination, instead of being used by it and calling it something else.

29. Joseph Nachumovitch - October 10, 2012

It’s not possible to think without the use of imagination, but that is not a reason not to refer to it as thinking. When you think about hypothetical subjects do you feel prohibited from calling it thinking?
One thing that we all learned in the School was the difference between imagination and being in the state of imagination.

30. I in the sky - October 10, 2012

Ames Gilbert – 129/201:

“Some may think that there is no harm done when Burton’s prophecies fail. But this is not correct. Take, for example, the “fall of California into the ocean”. In preparation for this, many sheep, following his dictums, gave up their jobs, their careers, moved, took out loans, or built houses they could not afford. And Burton had no compunction about using spiritual blackmail on some, on the lines of, “If you disobey me, you will lose the school, the angels will abandon you”. Some lost everything, at least one committed suicide.”

It’s true that there has been a ripple effect following the major predictions. For 1998 several students did build houses in Oregon House and some changed professions and moved back to the area. This, to me, seemed to be part of the entire process. The predictions did change the landscape, literally, of the immediate area. And those dwellings and resources helped galvanize the community; gave the community a much more substantial infrastructure and economy that it did not have prior to the expansion.

There has been a lot of misinformation and misconception on the blog regarding the predictions . Ex members generally fail to mention that Robert qualified the predictions in very definite terms – that he received this information from Influence C and it was his duty to pass it on. But he did not insist that any prediction was bound to happen or that he was in any way certain of the outcome. He did say we should assume the events will happen but in the end it is up to the gods to allow it or not.

Anyone who believes in higher powers and has observed their ways will understand that no man can predict the future. Men can only serve as mediums and in that capacity either knowingly or unknowingly. They can be given impulses to predict with the belief the knowledge comes from them or they can fully understand they are instruments in the hands of gods and it is their role to pass on a communication in the form of a prediction. That is the extent of man’s powers.

Whether a prediction comes to pass is entirely out of their control and may or may not be fulfilled. But there are always implications and ramifications either way. More than 2000 students were aware of the 1998 predication of California’s fall and each handled it in their own way. Some believed it with every fiber of their being and some disbelieved it with an equal wholeheartedness. And many others took positions somewhere along the spectrum of belief or disbelief. And as you mentioned one person who, by the way, was a paraplegic with a very diminished quality of life from the average person, did commit suicide.

But as it has been with most of the predictions that did not materialize there is always an exodus of students, as was the case with the “failed” prediction of 1984. Soon after that S.S. filed his suit and shortly after that Miles departed. As a side note to the “depression” of 1984, Robert said as part of that scenario the stock market would lose a lot of its value and leading up to the January date it did undergo a precipitous fall, which a few savy student investors capitalized on by shorting the indexes.

My approach to the predictions has been rather low key. I’ve always tried to prepare myself internally and usually did little of the outward preparations. One student who followed the preparedness to a T suffered a major breakdown afterwards where they had to be cared for by relatives and took 10 years to recover, after which time they re-joined the FoF.

It’s clear to see that the predictions cause upheavals for many people one way or another and this all seems to be a major part of the reasons for the predicted events in the first place. They jolt many of us into new directions, they shake us up, cause us to re-evaluate our lives, cause some to pull closer and some to retreat. I can honestly say for me they are of a very minor concern. Nothing I came for is changed by an external event either happening or not happening. What I came for is unaffected by predictions being fulfilled or not.

31. Guru Free Zone - October 10, 2012

29. “One thing that we all learned in the School was the difference between imagination and being in the state of imagination.”

It’s not something we learned or that you learned. It’s something that you believed, and maybe still believe. What you learned was to capitalize the first letter in the word “school” when referring to this cult. It’s part of the indoctrination and the brainwashing. We were taught that not only was it a “school” — which is one of the biggest deceptions of all — but we were also taught to believe that it’s a really GOOD school, and worthy of a capital “S”. It may not seem like a big thing, but learning to change those habits (capitalizing the word “school”) is a big step in breaking free.

About imagination: What we called “imagination” in this cult was a way of describing a type of daydreaming, or a lack of alertness or awareness, or a lack of engagement with the world around us. But I think that describes the state that we were actually taught in the FOF. To really exist in this cult, you needed to “tune out” from the strange world. You could not sincerely engage with the activities in the FOF, or you would wake up to the delusion and leave. Tuning out was a coping mechanism. I’ve discovered since leaving “the school” that I’ve been much more aware of the world around me and my presence within it, and much less “in imagination” about numerous things that I was wholly “in imagination” about when I was in “the school.”

30. “… he (Burton) did not insist that any prediction was bound to happen or that he was in any way certain of the outcome.”

This is a complete lie. First of all, what on earth does that mean? Apparently we’ve stepped into some sort of Orwellian novel. “Burton didn’t believe what he said, unless of course he meant it when he said it, but otherwise don’t take it seriously.”

But Burton DOES take his predications very seriously, and he expects his followers to as well. On numerous occasions he has asked people to quit their jobs and move to Oregon House because of the upcoming earthquake (1998) and nuclear war (2006) that would destroy all of civilization (except for Oregon House, of course). He has never stopped repeating his predictions of world doom, and the predictions that his cult would be an “ark” of a new civilization. His “prophecies” have been a major part of the Fellowship of Friends for more than four decades, and it’s been one of the primary focuses of this cult. Not surprisingly it’s been stressed less and less since the consequences of another failure probably would get more and more people thinking, “Hmmmmm.”

To this day, Burton continues to suggest that the FOF cult will be the seat of a new civilization. Nothing new with doomsday cults. It makes people feel special, and it plays on their fears.

33. Tim Campion - October 10, 2012

Defending Apollo

“My4bits” wrote August 11, 2008

The Ark was a central concept for me during my years in the Fellowship. We were told that Influence C wanted something for us, and something from us: For us — our astral body; From us — an Ark. And so, building the Ark became, for me at least, the way to ensure my spiritual success. I went “whole hog and the postage, too.” It was “3rd line.”

From 1996 through 2006, I worked to develop security for Apollo. This involved meeting on a regular basis with others who were responsible for security for the 1998 prediction. Together, we developed “what-if” scenarios to address the possible chaos and disruption that would ensue following the fall of California, and how we could/would respond to protect our esoteric community.

You may have heard about the organization of Neighborhood Groups at Apollo, in preparation for 1998. This organization was detailed and extensive, and went through several iterations over the years.

The N.G. plan included intelligent protocols for communication and safety, in the event of a catastrophe. Neighborhoods and individuals were advised to purchase radios and walkie-talkies. If and when the predicted occurred, the community response would be tightly coordinated from a communications center located at the Winery, which would have a chain-of-command link to RB himself.

There were also detailed plans, more hidden, to provide an armed response, if necessary, in the event of chaos. RB had said, “One day, we will be required to defend Apollo.” Who knows what he truly meant in saying this, but the gears were set in motion to do so, in a very physical way, when the time came.

Leading up to the 1998 date, many students purchased firearms, in response to the general message of impending chaos and danger from “outside.” Reactively, this trend was sharply discouraged, as the FoF was suddenly becoming “visible” in local gun shops.

There was, however, never an order to stockpile weapons, as one might imagine of a defensive and paranoid cult. The accumulation of “firepower” was tightly managed, controlled, and limited. The scale was to be that of individual gun owners, and good citizens, observing all relevant Federal and State laws.

Under the management of Peter B. and others, contingency plans were developed to provide an effective, armed response in case of emergency. The approach was, and is, legal — any property owner is rightly entitled to protect his own property, with lethal force if necessary, for self-defense.

There were no automatic weapons, no hand grenades, bazookas, etc., Waco-style. This extreme was never given a first or second thought. The potential foe was the extreme chaos that would predictably result from Armadeddon-like catastrophes, such as the fall of California and eventually, 2006 — not from the Federal government or crazed, gun-toting locals. We simply needed to have the means to protect ourselves, as a community, and as an Ark, in case of a large-scale disruption in which law enforcement agencies would no longer be an effective deterrent.

RB supervised these preparations, made suggestions, but always worked through intermediaries. He cannot be implicated directly in having made any preparations of this kind. Nevertheless, the story is interesting in that it shows the intensive level of involvement in the potential likelihood of RB’s predictions: We were allowed, and encouraged, to believe in an “enemy,” against which we must be able to protect ourselves, if need be. From a distance, RB said only that we would need sufficient firepower in order not to be overwhelmed.

These facts certainly should create some “cognitive dissonance” in those who think that RB didn’t really take his own predictions seriously. For us, or at least for me, it became a potential “life or death” situation. At stake, the Ark and my soul, myself and my friends.

I don’t think that more detailed information would be helpful for bloggers who are open to learning the lessons to be garnered from this story. It would tend to distract. No laws were broken. No one was shot. It was all a charade, but one which some people, such as myself took all-too-seriously. But therein lies the danger, and the lesson.

Finally, I came to realize that there was no community, in a real sense. There was no Ark. There was nothing really to protect, and certainly not with lethal force! All of the weapons I accumulated during these years have since been sold back into the aether. All of the training I and others acquired in this decade-long cause was for naught. All of the time and resources that were expended for these preparations, gone. A harsh, dark lesson, indeed.

What is the situation now? Who knows? My take is that “security” on this scale is now a non-issue for Apollo. It remains only an everyday consideration for RB himself — perfectly legal, and perfectly justifiable.
But then there’s 2012…

So are we 72 days away from Armageddon, or has the chiming iPad confirmed that 2018 is our new “date with destiny”?

34. Shard_of_Oblivion - October 10, 2012

#30 “I in the sky” comes up with some pretty thin excuses for Burton’s prophetic failures.

It is a common picture that charismatic cults make apocalyptic predictions, I can just imagine how sneering Burton would have been about other groups if he had NOT been in the prophecy business himself, and how superior his followers would have felt to those other hapless fools who deluded themselves with nonsense predictions.

Here is what we see: whatever Burton says, “I in the sky” laps it up.

35. Adab - October 10, 2012

“One thing that we all learned in the School was the difference between imagination and being in the state of imagination.”

An interesting claim. Over the past few years, I have put a number of ex-Fofers who were interested in learning more about the Fourth Way, in contact with the Gurdjieff Foundation.

Most of these meetings have had the same result. The ex-students have come away feeling that the GF is too simple or basic for them, and they already felt they had advanced far beyond it in the Fellowship.

One typical comment was ,”I feel I am present most of the time during the day, and that I already know my machine quite well.”

A pattern began to emerge, which I could also relate to my own experience after leaving. Fellowship students, and those who have recently left, feel they have all the the answers. They have it through the great esoteric secret method of the Sequence, their ability to correct the flow of imagination through ‘Work I’s’, all their type/centre of gravity/alchemy “observations” etc…

It is no good trying to tell them that the Sequence is at best, a minor tool that might be useful for a [short] while, or that using Work I’s is just the mind trying to correct the mind, that many of their observations weren’t objective realizations but ‘running commentaries’. They won’t believe you because their methods give them the comfort of having a set of tools to work with and an answer to get to.

How hard it is to truly give up the status of a ‘the seeker trying to find an answer’! It takes a long time for these beliefs to die away…. to realize that there is really no-one there.

Burton’s stream of failed prophecies and false starts with his ‘men #5’ all fail for a reason. They are based on the belief that his group as a whole, and individuals within it, are on the way towards a privileged position, internally and externally. Cold hard facts have proved otherwise. It is all Imagination.

in #30 “I in the sky” put forward:

“Ex members generally fail to mention that Robert qualified the predictions in very definite terms – that he received this information from Influence C and it was his duty to pass it on.”

OK so what does that add up to?

Are C influence themselves unsure of the future?

Is the channel of communication between C influence and Burton plagued with noise?

Do C influence deliberately tease Burton and his students with false information?

Whatever the explanation, it doesn’t look good for Burton’s claim to be a safe pair of hands into which students should place the care of their nascent eternal souls, does it?

“He did say we should assume the events will happen but in the end it is up to the gods to allow it or not…It’s clear to see that the predictions cause upheavals for many people one way or another and this all seems to be a major part of the reasons for the predicted events in the first place. They jolt many of us into new directions, they shake us up, cause us to re-evaluate our lives, cause some to pull closer and some to retreat. I can honestly say for me they are of a very minor concern.”

Yes, all the stress, pain, and suffering these “assumptions” have caused others is for you a very minor concern, they change nothing for you, and on some level you acknowledge the assumptions seem like a ploy.

Doomsday cult

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Doomsday cult is an expression used to describe groups who believe in Apocalypticism and Millenarianism, and can refer both to groups that prophesy catastrophe and destruction, and to those that attempt to bring it about. The expression was first used by sociologist John Lofland in his 1966 study of a group of Unification Church members in California, Doomsday Cult: A Study of Conversion, Proselytization, and Maintenance of Faith. A classic study of a group with cataclysmic predictions had previously been performed by Leon Festinger and other researchers, and was published in his book When Prophecy Fails: A Social and Psychological Study of a Modern Group that Predicted the Destruction of the World.

Some authors have used “doomsday cult” solely to characterize groups that have used acts of violence to harm their members and/or others, such as the salmonella poisoning of salad bars by members of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh group, and the mass murder/suicide of members of the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God group. Others have used the term to refer to groups which have made and later revised apocalyptic prophesies or predictions, such as the Church Universal and Triumphant led by Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and the initial group studied by Festinger, et al. Still others have used the term to refer to groups that have prophesied impending doom and cataclysmic events, and also carried out violent acts, such as the Aum Shinrikyo sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway and the mass murder/suicide of members of Jim Jones’ Peoples Temple group after similar types of predictions.

Referring to his study, Festinger and later other researchers have attempted to explain the commitment of members to their associated doomsday cult, even after the prophesies of their leader have turned out to be false. Festinger explained this phenomenon as part of a coping mechanism called dissonance reduction, a form of rationalization. Members often dedicate themselves with renewed vigor to the group’s cause after a failed prophesy, and rationalize with explanations such as a belief that their actions forestalled the disaster, or a belief in the leader when the date for disaster is postponed. Some researchers believe that the use of the term by the government and the news media can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy, in which actions by authorities reinforces the apocalyptic beliefs of the group, which in turn can inspire further controversial actions. Group leaders have themselves objected to comparisons between one group and another, and parallels have been drawn between the concept of a self-fulfilling prophecy and the theory of a deviancy amplification spiral.”

Cognitive dissonance reduction

“Following on from my earlier post about the way psychologists look at the world, let me tell you a story which I think illustrates very well the tendency academic psychologists have for reductionism. It’s a story about a recent paper on the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance, and about a discussion of that paper by a group of psychologists that I was lucky enough to be part of.

Cognitive Dissonance is a term which describes an uncomfortable feeling we experience when our actions and beliefs are contradictory. For example, we might believe that we are environmentally conscious and responsible citizen, but might take the action of flying to Spain for the weekend. Our beliefs about ourselves seem to be in contradiction with our actions. Leon Festinger, who proposed dissonance theory, suggested that in situations like this we are motivated to reduce dissonance by adjusting our beliefs to be in line with our actions.

Obviously after-the-event it is a little too late to adjust our actions, so our beliefs are the only remaining point of movement. In the flying to Spain example you might be motivated by cognitive dissonance to change what you believe about flying: maybe you come to believe that flying isn’t actually that bad for the environment, or that focussing on personal choices isn’t the best way to understand environmental problems, or you could even go all the way and decide that you’re not an environmentally responsible person.

The classic experiment of dissonance theory involved recruiting male students to take part in a crushingly boring experiment. The boring part was an hour of two trivial actions — loading spools into a tray, turning pegs a quarter-turn in a peg-board. At the end of this, after the students through the experiment was over, was the interesting part of us. The students were offered either $1 or $20 to tell the next participant in the experiment (actually the female accomplice of the experimenter) that the experiment she was about to do was really enjoyable. After telling this lie, the participants were then interviewed about how enjoyable they really found the experiment. What would you expect from this procedure? Now one view would predict that the students paid $20 would enjoy the experiment more. This is certainly what behaviourist psychology would predict — a larger reward should produce a bigger effect (with the effect being a shift from remembering the task as boring, which is was, to remembering it being enjoyable, which getting ¬£20 presumably was). But cognitive dissonance theory suggests that the opposite would happen. Those paid $20 would have no need to change their beliefs about the task. They lied about how enjoyable the task was to the accomplice, something which presumably contradicted their beliefs about themselves as nice and trustworthy people, but they did it for a good reason, the $20. Now consider the group paid only $1. They lied about how enjoyable the task was, but looking around for a reason they cannot find one — what kind of person would lie to an innocent for only $1? So, the theory goes, they would experience dissonance between their actions and their beliefs and reduce this by adjusting their beliefs: they would come to believe that they actually did enjoy the boring task, and this is the reason that they told the accomplice that it was enjoyable. And, in fact, this is what happened.

At this point I want you to notice two things about cognitive dissonance. Firstly, it requires the existence of quite sophisticated mental machinery to operate. Not only do you need to have abstract beliefs about the world and yourself, you need to have some mechanism which detects when these beliefs are in contradiction with each other or with your actions, and which can (unconsciously) adjust selective beliefs to reduce this contradiction. The second thing to notice is that all this sophisticated mental machinery is postulated to exist from changes in behaviour, it is never directly measured. We don’t have any evidence that the change in attitudes really does result from an uncomfortable internal state (‘dissonance’) or that any such dissonance does result from an unconscious perception of the contradiction between beliefs and actions.”

‘One student who followed the preparedness to a T suffered a major breakdown afterwards where they had to be cared for by relatives and took 10 years to recover, after which time they re-joined the FoF.’

If this is the person I think it is, some people, including myself – personally, followed what happened with that person and the impact it had to them and, especially, the havoc it wreaked with their LIFE family and their relationship to those supposed near and dear ones – those who previously, while they were in Fellowship of Friends, were to be ignored. Of course, Fellowship of Friends and Robert Earl Burton merely washed their hands of the situation – pronounced the person worthy of ‘medical leave-of-absence’ and sent them away from Oregon House – Apollo, with little or no friends left to be in touch with – no social network support system. What choice did they have but to fall back on their LIFE family?

Yes, they may have rejoined FoF. But look at the wreckage it created for so many people.

I in the sky, you are definitely a sociopath and fit well into a sociopathic cult.

44. Just the Facts Ma'am - October 10, 2012

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

‘For those who have ever wondered what the quote, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me,” means, there are many interpretations. This is another way of saying “once bitten, twice shy.” In other words, there are people out there who are not what they seem. Some people will be pretend friendship for all of the wrong reasons, such as for money, or something else that can benefit them. In either case, this is not good. Friendship is a selfless thing, which should not have ulterior motives. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Friendship is only one case where this quote has significance. It is also appropriate in love, war and various situations. If someone intentionally fools a person once, they will most likely try to fool them again. This quote deals generally and primarily with deception and human naivete. Deception does not even have to have a human face to it, but the underlying message is that there is no excuse for falling for the same things more than once. While this quote does not discourage trust, it discourages trusting too much when the evidence is against it. Human nature is to learn from experience, another aspect of this quote.”Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me” is an example of an English proverb. A proverb is a phrase that states a general truth, based on the historic Proverbs in the Old Testament. Nearly every language and every culture has their own sets of proverbs. Both Confucius and Buddha are major sources for proverbs. . .’

Reminds me of one of those questions such as, “Do you believe Christ is the Son of God?”

Her chronic use of pre-digested phrases and terms enables readers here to see just how thoroughly indoctrinated she is. It’s as though she’s one of the Stepford Wives — eyes glazed over, and smile pasted on — and she joined the discussion. Like any computer, she will continue to recite the usual ready-made and meaningless talking points, all the while telling everyone else just how mechanical they are.

Only question is, what’s the next pre-digested phrase? What’s the next ready-made argument?

talk about historical revisionism! Below are the figures for the index known as Dow Jones Industrial Average (popularly known as “The Stock Market) for the period before, during and after Burton’s prophecy of a Depression in 1984. To be exact, August 1984, to coincide with an astrologically significant event, which I will not bore readers with, but which those interested can find here, for example:

Care to point out the ‘precipitous fall’ you referred to?
Along with your woolly thinking you collect hoary myths and lies designed to protect Burton’s image in your mind and others, not to mention your self-image and those of your cohort. Yet another case of Burton supplying the crazy while you guys work like beavers to supply the missing “wisdom”.

Now it may be true that some “savvy student investors” made some money betting on the fortunes of particular companies (futures), I don’t know (but I doubt it), but this had nothing to do with the general index. There were no equivalents to SPDRs then to bet on, AFAIK. Even the idea of mutual funds based on various indices was in its infancy at that time. The likelihood of someone extremely knowledgeable betting futures on each one of the component companies in the DIJA is remote, though not impossible, but anyone doing so based on Burton’s prediction is 99% certain to have lost money, because there was no pattern in the top 30 companies during that time frame to bet against, prices of their individual shares went up and down fairly randomly if you look at the component companies individually. Nothing anomalous was reported for any of those companies, such as out-of-line earnings, disastrous investments, failures of subsidiaries, etc., during that time period.
On the contrary, I had reliable knowledge of followers that lost a great deal of money, and one who became bankrupt.
I believe that Burton took his predictions seriously, and literally. Every word. He never made any qualifications whatsoever in my hearing, or in the hearing of anyone I’ve asked. Never.

Back to generalities in your recent posts . . .
You cheerily and blithely assume that the average reader here, and the average seeker shares the following presumptions with you:
• That there are ‘higher forces’
• And that they are interested in mankind at all
• And that they, though unimaginably powerful, desperately need Burton and his followers help to carry out their jobs
And that, in exchange for this help and for obeying and supporting Burton, they will make all those who pay Burton each month ‘immortal’, while consigning all others to a fate rather worse than hell
• They can foretell the future (a.k.a. the play/future is written and they either write the script or have access to it)
• They have chosen Burton to direct a task of supreme importance to them (‘task’ for the ‘school’)
• They have chosen to use Burton as an exclusive intermediary between them and those who write checks to Burton
• They communicate with Burton and let him know what the future holds, as well as giving him specific instructions on how to deal with it.
• They communicate with Burton each time he initiates a new sexual contact with male heterosexual followers and let him know that their will is that each in turn have sex with him to enhance their evolution.
• Etc.

I can’t speak for other readers, but I share none of these assumptions. Not one. Notice not only that there is no proof forthcoming, but that every one of them depends on the claims of Burton, starting with the ‘fact’ that he is ‘conscious’. The rest follows circular fashion, like the game of ‘Monopoly’, but instead of passing “Go” every round, followers like you chant, “Robert is conscious, so . . .”

I put it to you–and any reasonable ‘seeker’ who happens to land on these pages–that there is no reliable way that one can tell apart the messages that Burton claims to receive from these theoretical ‘higher beings’ from random firings of his neurons, triggered by superstitious signs and the crudest numerology. I put it to you that the credulity gap can only be bridged by those with a massive psychological investment of some kind to protect. I put it to you that these ‘messages’ are so notably inconsistent and unreliable, that they cannot be distinguished from the maunderings of a madman, and that if you choose to believe in them and their provenance as claimed by Burton, you are in practical effect joining a religion founded by Burton and leaving any evidence-based reality. Finally, I put it to you that consequently your faith is entirely based on his good faith, which has proven to be anything but good by normal parameters, and thus that any adjustment to that ‘normal’ by yourself and other die-hard followers is by definition is magical thinking, since there is no reasonable evidence to support it.

And a little more on the story of Kevin Kelly, who obeyed Burton’s instructions, and then committed suicide when that particular prediction did not come true. As you mention in your casual throwaway line, he was a paraplegic. As a nurse, I took care of him from time to time, and know how helpless he was, and how humiliating some aspects of his life were. For example, every day someone like me had to reach into his rectum with their hand to clear away the accumulated waste because the last section of his intestines were also paralyzed. Hard for the caregiver, much, much harder for him. Nevertheless, it is a testament to his character and will that, despite his many difficulties, he was able to put himself through Yuba college, and eventually find work in the Bay area that gave him dignity and some independence, especially financially. Burton in due course ordered him to give up this unique job opportunity and return to Oregon House to await the catastrophe. When the prediction predictably failed, Kevin was left adrift, all his hard-won independence and way to make a living thrown away on the whim of a psychopath, with no recourse. And of course, no apologies or remorse from Burton. Kevin decided to end his misery in the only way he could. The psychopath Burton then proceeded to tell everyone that Kevin had ‘lost the school’, ‘ and the support of the angels, was not ‘on the Way’. Decades of sacrifice and hard work, cheerfulness in the face of extreme adversity, his love for his fellows, his many acts of generosity and goodwill, all meant nothing. Nothing at all, except as an object lesson for Burton to keep his followers in line. BTW, contrast that to the way he interpreted and treated the suicide of Abraham Goldman, the Fellowship of Friends lawyer . . .

I know, Eye in the Sky, how can I be sure that Burton was not just transmitting messages from his 44 buddies in each case, humbly and in obedience to their will?

As I’ve said before, what I observed is that Burton uses infatuation and fear to control his followers. The tragedy is that the sheep have trained themselves to expect this, see this as further confirmation of Burton’s ‘consciousness’. That’s why he makes prophecies. That’s why he trashes the memory of one of his most faithful disciples. To control the flock.
The utter, conscienceless shithead.

Yes, Robert Burton (the Great Karnak)-

I remember during the ’98 prediction you faced a fine if you had the balls to make a left hand turn onto Marysville road from Rices Crossing. No more trips to the bay area or sacramento. If you wanted to fly you had to use the Reno airport. I had to drive through an unbelievable white-out on Rt 80 because of that rule. It was very important that you obey robert and influence c…..so important that we’ll fine your ass if you don’t follow orders.

Of course current members would remember this time period and respond; “think of all the opportunities to be present when driving through blinding snow having no idea where the pavement is. You should be thanking your teacher for forcing you to drive to Reno. Remember when you are in a real school you must obey the will of the teacher”

53. Tim Campion - October 11, 2012

Ames, thanks for your outstanding effort. Your tireless pursuit of truth contrasts sharply with the indolence of Robert Burton’s emissary.

“I in the sky” is a special case. Robert Burton and “I” might be seen as narcissistic siblings, agreeing from the outset on the terms of the hustle. It is all about them, and the benefits they personally receive, regardless of the cost to others.

“I in the sky” is fond of claiming they speak for many, if not most Fellowship members.

Joesph N:
“It’s not possible to think without the use of imagination, but that is not a reason not to refer to it as thinking. When you think about hypothetical subjects do you feel prohibited from calling it thinking? One thing that we all learned in the School was the difference between imagination and being in the state of imagination.”

Of course you use your imagination while thinking about a hypothetical subject, like I said, I’m all for it.

I would not prohibit anyone from calling it thinking if, when dealing with a hypothetical subject, one were still open to dissenting points of view…embracing anyone playing devil’s advocate to test one’s hypothesis, for instance. That requires critical thought and healthy ego boundaries.

Otherwise, taking the road of faith-based thinking one departs from rational thought, relaxes one’s ego boundaries, and eventually becomes blinded by one’s imaginary or distorted view of reality…And history shows us that pretty soon you are drinking the koolaide or strapping on an explosive vest.

Usually one doesn’t associate intelligence with blindness as you assert in your statement about Einstein, but quite the opposite.

Intelligence is usually associated with light and illumination.

In fact, we owe a great deal of our understanding about the properties of light to Einstein.

I was suggesting that your style of close minded, faith-based thinking qualifies as you say, as being “in imagination” or as I like to say, using delusional thinking, which really isn’t thinking at all but fantasizing…like about what lifetime one might be on.

You claim to know the difference between intentional use of the imagination and being in a state of fantasy, but I don’t believe you, frankly.

The predictions of the Fall and Armageddon were not some “device” in the FOF for testing students mettle, they were it’s raison d’etre! They define the Aim of the school, which is to create an “Ark”to survive the disasters and provide the seeds of a new civilization. Armageddon was to be the great leveler, otherwise you guys are just kooky nobodies in a backwater foothills town.

Do you think that the Aim is to bring palm trees to Yuba county??

Joseph Nachumovitch I do not understand your goal here.

I have been a FoF member for many years and lived in OH most of the time.

Every now and then I tend to leave a post here mainly for the sake of those who physically left 25-30 years ago, yet mind wise they are still in the FoF captivity.

I know I cannot change that, yet I am entering this discussion every 4-5 months just to check how things are.

You however are quite inconsiderate. There are guys here who were sexually abused both physically and mentally and apparently they cannot or would not let go of the FoF and set themselves free. Why do you bother them? What is your goal here?

I don’t know if you are a current member or not. If you are, then let me tell you that as far as I know there is an explicit request in the FoF NOT to take part in such discussions.
If you are not a member than why are you defending RB’s teaching?

I wonder.

As I recall, strange as it seems now, a current student is under the impression that everything they do is monitored by dread “C influence” who are apparently the kind of beings that like to arrange drowning accidents and terminal illnesses to “help” their faithful aspirants to keep to the straight and narrow.

For those who do risk it, let me personally assure you that despite my disrespecting them for over 20 years, they seem unwilling or unable to arrange any little accidents for me. Come on C influence, what’s keeping you, see if you can make me ill or fall downstairs or something – bet you can’t!

In the UK at the moment, one of the main news stories concern the revelations (after his death) that a favourite DJ, children’s programme presenter, philanthropist and all round good guy, Jimmy Savile, turns out to have been a predatory serial child molester. The burning question of the day is “How did he get away with it for so long, why did no one complain?” And the chilling answer appears to be that someone of his influence and charisma, can threaten the victims to such an extent that they were AFRAID to complain.

Part of the reason it is such a big story is that Jimmy Savile had a very chatty cheery persona, but when we re-listen to his voice in the light of the revelations, we can now hear that awful self congratulatory tone that kiddie fiddlers seem to use.

I hear that same whining needling tone from Burton. Listen and see if you agree that his voice is sagging under the weight of a self deluded sense of his own martyrdom.

Jomopinata (#130-59 or thereabouts),
thanks for the correction, you are absolutely right.
Kevin was able to move his head and one little finger on one hand, with a bit of movement from the finger next to it. That movement allowed him to control his wheelchair with a miniature joystick. Perhaps some of you remember him ‘dancing’ with partners at some of the balls; he was very good with the controls. It was an amazing accomplishment to able to find a worthwhile job that gave him dignity, income and some measure of independence . . .

Someone (#57), interesting that you are so concerned about Joseph, but don’t mention I in the Sky. Are you and she official exceptions to the ‘explicit request’ not take part in these discussions? What qualifications do you have that the average follower doesn’t have?
And since you’re here . . .
I in the Sky (and any current members of the Fellowship of Friends who are reading this),
I have a question. I’d be very grateful if you would take the time to give a considered answer.
Using your best understanding, please tell me why you think this blog exists. I mean, exists at all. What called the blog into being? What do you feel is it its purpose (as distinct from the various purposes of each individual contributor)?

Thanks very much.

Wonderful post. Very humanizing. I fully expect I in the sky to ignore the humanity of what you were describing, regarding Kevin.

You’d once earlier described on this blog the daily ordeal that Kevin Kelly had to endure to complete his evacuation process. When I read that several years ago, I thought, that is very abstract for most people, because they will never have to require someone – as did Kevin – to help them with a bodily function that we know repulses another person to help us with. And most of us will never do what you, and his regular assistants did, which is to physically remove the stools of an adult. (Babies and diapers are another subject!) It is not something anyone would cheerfully volunteer to do, in or out of the Fellowship. Thus of us who have done that for a fellow adult, know that it involves some kind of “ultimate” in terms of acceptance of being human, and dignity.

Speaking of dignity: your mentioning Kevin’s loss of dignity, income and independence, when Robert told him to give up his job, is heartbreaking. Again, like the above paragraph, almost none of us will understand what it means to be so disabled as to find virtually every job opportunity closed to us. To have no income or money is to have few choices. Robert’s reaction to Kevin’s despair and suicide, just like his reaction to Abe’s suicide, was completely dismissive.

Interesting, regarding Jimmy Savile. Here in the states, Jerry Sandusky, the former football coach, was recently sentenced. The non-profit charity that he founded, The Second Mile, was to help at-risk youth. They were vulnerable children. There is a large imbalance of power in that combination: such children do not report sexual molestation with the confidence that they will be heard, and that the wrongs will stop. When the founder of the organization is the abuser, who do you go to, for help? If Robert is at the top of the FF organization, and those in positions of power are not independent officers or directors, then who does one go to when Robert is the abuser? In addition to their being answerable to Robert in a practical way, their minds are so controlled that they don’t even realize how much they’ve lost any semblance of common sense or ethical sense of right and wrong.

Re : 66 Fee Fi fo fum.

There is an article in a recent New Yorker which asks that question : “How could the people around Sandusky who maybe knew at least that something was not quite right stay silent for so long?”
http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/atlarge/2012/09/24/120924crat_atlarge_gladwell

Inaction or maintaining the status quo in the face of a persistent “grey area” moral/ethics/common humanity concern when nothing bad is directly happening to you or your loved ones may not be just because of brainwashing/mind control. It is more widespread than that. On the positive side, there is always a whistle blower every now and then.

68. Golden Veil - October 12, 2012

Even when something “bad” is happening to you and/or your loved ones, “cognitive dissonance,” “maintaining the status quo,” and cult mind control under the direction of a charismatic leader can allow you to enable the unthinkable to exist. If the idea that a man couldn’t possibly engage in unwanted sex is unbelievable to you, know this, you’re wrong! By the way, charismatic leader + pedophilia + cult makes for a particularly evil mix. If you can watch this HBO Presents documentary and also look back at the history of WWII, you’ll know that nothing is amorally impossible, given the right circumstances…

I in the Sky (#130-30 or thereabouts),
like other apologists, you strain mightily but unconvincingly to explain away the significance of Burton’s prophecies. As David pointed out above, they were in fact central to the whole story. The PURPOSE of the ‘school’—according to Burton—was to form an ‘ark’ which would save the best and initiate a new era after the ‘end of civilization’, not “bring palm trees to Yuba county.”
Here is a collection of Burton’s prophecies, the output in just two weeks of 1982! There were no qualifications whatsoever. Any qualifications are just the figments of your imagination, produced after the fact, the feeble attempts of you and others like you to justify the unjustifiable.

I in the Sky, have you no shame?

Burton’s prophecies from first half of November, 1982:
• Nov. 2, 1982
“Revelations: “ . . . the seventh angel . . .” After the seventh conscious being appears, Armageddon will come.”
• Nov. 3, 1982
C-Influence will ensure that all that is left of culture will be taken to Renaissance [the Fellowship compound] for posterity.” –
• Nov. 3, 1982
Florence, Venice, Siena will probably not be bombed. C-Influence has indicated to me that Naples (home of NATO), Rome, and Milan will be bombed. Neutron bombs may be used. Neutron bombs destroy only humans.
• Nov. 4, 1982
“We are founding a new civilization.”
• Nov. 4, 1982
“Armageddon has wrung a school out of the gods.”
• Nov. 9, 1982
“My role is to predict the fall of California and Armageddon.”
• Nov. 9, 1982
“Don’t put money into banks after Dec. 1983.”
• Nov. 9, 1982
“The depression will work to our advantage, we will go through it unscathed.”
• Nov. 9, 1982
“We are very well prepared for the coming depression in 1984.”
• Nov. 9, 1982
“California is the artichoke capitol of the world . . . It means it will choke in 1998.”
• Nov. 9, 1982
“Haley’s Comet is going to ruin it all, this whole decade is not a good decade.”
• Nov. 11, 1982
“The 44th president of the US will be in office at the occurrence of Armageddon, 2006.”
• Nov. 14, 1982
“After the year 2006, Genoa may be the port where art is taken by ship to the East Coast – from there by existing highways to Renaissance.”

If you had any intellectual honesty, I in the Sky, you would update us on what Burton was saying in the weeks leading to the ‘Fall of California’ in 1998, and let readers judge for themselves. We know, from your own words, that you attached little importance to this prediction, and only viewed it as a metaphor (for what?) but that certainly wasn’t true of Burton and the rest of the sheep. Do tell!

Thanks for the Malcolm Gladwell article. I enjoy his insights. In this article, he makes 2 points that made me think of the FF, “When monsters roam free, we assume that people in positions of authority ought to be able to catch them if only they did their jobs. But that might be wishful thinking. A pedophile … is someone adept not just at preying on children but at confusing, deceiving, and charming the adults responsible for those children…”

True. We expect behavior that is morally wrong to be acted on and restrained by those in positions of authority. In the FF, who are those people? All “senior” members are completely beholden to RB. None of them are truly accountable to FF members, as a whole. Outside of the FF, is anyone going to act on accusations where none of the participants (except for TB) are minors?

That leads to the second point. RB does not find consenting gay men, but preys on heterosexual men. They are not minors (except for TB), so FF diehard loyalists can always say that the participants are consenting adults. But what did they consent to? If you left out RB’s mind-twisting “I am a goddess in a man’s body” line, would you happily cooperate with him in bed? That’s where Gladwell’s other sentence comes in: “confusing, deceiving, and charming the adults…” It is not just the young men that RB confuses and “charms.” He has also won over the diehard FF apologists, who excuse RB with their circular thinking.

List of predictions of the end of the world
From RationalWiki

“ Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. ”
—Jesus of Nazareth

“ I saw one, one time, that said, “The next week, the world is ending.” And in the next week’s paper, they said, “We were miraculously saved at the zero hour by a koala-fish mutant bird.” Crazy shit. ”
—Tabloid-reading customer in Clerks

There’s always been good business predicting the end of the world. Here are some examples, with the predicted date of the end of all things.

Unspecified date
Zoroastrianism claims that the end of the world will happen when a comet, called Gochihr, strikes the earth. It will cause all the world’s metals to melt and will burn up the world. At the same time, sinners and the pious will pass through this river of molten metal. Sinners will have their sins burnt away and the pious will feel like they’re “passing through warm milk.”

28th century BCE
The oldest known prediction of the end of the world is recorded on Assyrian tablets.

1st century CE
Early Christianity: Second coming. Any day now!
Revelation: Armageddon.

7th century
Muslims believed in the Qiyamah (Last Judgement) during which time Jesus will come to earth, end all wars, and kill ad-Dajjal – the Muslim anti-Christ. Then every person who ever lived will be bodily resurrected, before being judged by God. The faithful go to heaven, and the rest to hell. Apparently there’s also room for some “People of the Book”, i.e. Jews and Christians.

16th century
circa 1504: Sandro Botticcelli (yes, the painter) believed he was living during the End Times/Tribulation, according to an inscription on his painting The Mystical Nativity
1533: Michael Stifel: Judgement Day.

18th century
1719: Jacob Bernoulli: a comet seen in 1680 would return and collide with the Earth. (Said comet hasn’t been seen since.)

20th century
1914: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1915: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1918: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1920: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1925: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1941: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1975: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
mid-1970s: David Wilkerson: worldwide economic depression.
1977: William Branham: destruction of the U.S., termination of all governments into a world government, second coming.
1977: Pyramidologist Adam Rutherford: Beginning of the
Millennium
1978: Jim Jones (who took his cult with him)
1979-1980: John Todd: installation of a world government ruled by the Illuminati, with Jimmy Carter as the antichrist.
1980: Pat Robertson: “a year of sorrow and bloodshed that will have no end soon, for the world is being torn apart, and my kingdom shall rise from the ruins of it.”
1981: Hal Lindsey: pre-tribulational rapture.
1982: Pat Robertson: great tribulation.
1982: R.E. McMaster: world war and/or economic depression, based on cyclical theory.
1985: Pat Robertson: worldwide economic collapse.
1988: Hal Lindsey: second coming.
1988: Edgar Whisenant: second coming.
1988: Colin Deal: second coming.
1989: Edgar Whisenant: second coming.
1990: Elizabeth Clare Prophet: global thermonuclear war.
1991: Louis Farrakhan: the looming Gulf War would be the “War of Armageddon which is the final war.”
1992: Rollen Stewart: second coming.
1992: Mission for the Coming Days: second coming.
1994: Harold Camping: second coming.
1994: Some Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1997: Heaven’s Gate: Earth changes and a UFO abduction coinciding with the Hale-Bopp comet. Mass suicide in the hopes of hitching a ride on said UFOs.
1997: Jehovah’s Witnesses: Armageddon.
1998: The Church of the SubGenius: the Rupture. Every year on July 5th, they meet and party in reverence, certain that it will happen this year.
1999-2000: David Wilkerson: worldwide economic depression.
2000: Y2K: collapse of civilisation.

21st century
2003: George W. Bush: Operation Iraqi Freedom is part of God’s plan to wipe out the bad guys and herald in a “new age”. (plan still in progress)
2005-2026: William Strauss and Neil Howe: a crisis period in the U.S. comparable in effect to the American Revolution, Civil War, and Great Depression/WWII.
2007: Hal Lindsey: second coming.
2007: Pat Robertson: great tribulation.
2008: Ronald Weinland: start of the final years of Man’s rule on Earth.
2008: Sarah Palin: believes she is of the “Final Generation” and will see the End Times during her lifetime.
2008: The Large Hadron Collider will destroy the world with black holes, strangelets or something similarly scary and sciencey.
(You can keep up to date with whether this has happened yet here.)
2009: David Wilkerson: Earth-shattering calamity engulfing the whole megaplex, including areas of New Jersey and Connecticut. Major cities all across America experiencing riots and blazing fires.
2011: Harold Camping: second coming/rapture. May 21st, to be precise. He put up billboards! Later postponed to October 21st, but (presumably) nothing came of it. Camping will hold on to the money people sent him for the time being or for good, though followers were encouraged to drain their savings for Camping’s campaign funds and many are deeply disappointed.
2011: January 2011 September 30, according to this website. When this website first came to RationalWiki ‘s attention the Rapture was due the 21st of September 2009, then 11/11, then the 14th 21st of December 2009, and so on.
2012: But of course!
2018: Hal Lindsey: second coming.
2037: Hal Lindsey: third coming.

50,000,000th century. 5 Billion years from now: There is one school of thought that suggests that the sun will eventually run out of hydrogen fuel to fuse into helium and will expand, becoming a red giant as a result, and possibly swallowing the Earth’s orbit, or at the very least roasting it to a cinder crisp. As with all things scientific, however, there is another school of thought that says this won’t happen. It happens on Doctor Who, so that means it will happen. Unless it doesn’t (because of the changes the Doctor made to the timeline). Either way, watch out for Daleks.

300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000th century 3×1043 years from now: estimated time for all nucleons in the observable universe to decay, if the proton half-life takes the largest possible value (1041 years). This is the Total Existence Failure of the entire universe, anything complex enough to be considered life that would care about it would likely have evaporated to nothing long before this. Out of all the above, this is the most likely.

Anyone who was in the FoF for the right reasons didn’t care about the predictions, which is why so many students left because of them.

74. Tim Campion - October 12, 2012

This site has an unusual format and any newcomers will undoubtedly be confused by what they find here. The Fellowship of Friends – Living Presence Discussion essentially consists of a short story followed by 130 pages of comments! (Nearly 43,000 of them, I estimate.) For newcomers, I’d recommend viewing the very first page.

It begins with a young man attending a Fellowship of Friends “prospective student meeting” on the outskirts of London in 2005. A year later, he posted his observations from that perplexing experience on-line. For months his report drew little attention and few comments, but Spring of 2007 brought a flood, as members and ex-members of the secretive cult learned of this very public forum. Since those early days, with this discussion as a catalyst, roughly one third of the membership has departed Robert Earl Burton’s teaching.

I recommend reading (at least) the following comments on page 1:

1, 14, 20, 57, 72, 76, 79, 84, 86, 88, 129, 155, 225, 238, 259, 290, 294

The term “comment” does not do justice to the countless remarkable stories to be found within these pages.

People “don’t care about the predictions” if they’re not concerned about following a delusional cult leader.

People (generally) leave because they have an awakening with regard to Burton’s lack of integrity. They become more aware of his personality disorders. They see that his behavior is not benign, but that in fact he’s a sociopath who harms almost all of his followers to one degree or another. Any supposed benefits that people gain are either delusional and imaginary, or they are the types of benefits that anyone can gain from making a serious mistake and learning from it.

There aren’t any right reasons for continuing to follow this person — or any cult leader — once you see all of the above, and more.

Tim (#130-74 or thereabouts) is too modest to mention his own website devoted to the subject of Robert Earl Burton and his shenanigans, so I’ll do it for him.

I think anyone landing on these pages for the first time would be wise to follow his advice, and also go to: http://robertearlburton.blogspot.com/
where you’ll find the same kind of information, but organized in a completely different way. There, you can find items by date, and by a rich set of keywords as well (both in the column on the left of every page). And, there is an RSS feed so you can get back to the latest entries on this blog at any time.

Anyone who was in the FoF for the right reasons didn’t care about the predictions, which is why so many students left because of them.

I disagree with you there. Very few people left because the failed prediction of 1998, which was the “big one”. Just in case you think it was just pretense on REB part, remember that he reloaded with the same prediction 3 or 4 times in the 2-3 years following. By then, yes, people were tuning him out, except for those in the inner sanctuary. Similarly those who left in 1984 did not leave because of the failed 1984 prediction. Predictions add to the FOF folklore in unfortunate ways (1998 preparation and aftermath) but they are a minor part of the core issues, IMHO.

#70 Ames quotes Burton
• Nov. 9, 1982
“California is the artichoke capitol of the world . . . It means it will choke in 1998.”

I see. Um but why does it mean that exactly? Oh no hang on, it MEANS that because, artichoke contains within it the word choke, and C influence will have arranged it that way, because they know that you will turn out to be a dab hand at interpreting these arcane hints from the beyond, things that lesser minds might well miss. So they will both arrange that the vegetable ends up being named artichoke in English by 1982, they also make sure the soil and climate suited artichokes for centuries, and that humans settled the area who had access to the seeds, and the motivation to make a thriving artichoke business. They do all this so that on November 9th 1982 they can humiliate one Robert E Burton, who needs a little humility. Of course THEY knew all along that California wouldn’t choke, because they are higher beings and therefore cannot be wrong, they arranged the false hint though, because that cocky little fucker Burton needed the humiliating experience of NOT being able to interpret accurately the signs and portents of higher school.

mmmmmm.

On the topic of Sir Jimmy Savile. Over here in the U.K, Savile was one of the most celebrated TV presenters and benefactors of his time. He became a trustee of, and representative for several large childrens hospitals, raising money for charity to improve their lot. As it turns out, he was really seeking access to these children to satisfy his own sexual appetites. Hundreds of [then] children have now come forward with their stories of abuse independently.

They did not do so at the time because of the pressure of Savile’s personality and reputation as a peerless do-gooder at the time. He was revered by the British public in much the same way as Burton is revered in the FoF.

http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/jimmy-saviles-charities-had-grown-stingy-another-reason-to-give-their-money-to-others-8205517.html …………….

“If reports are to be believed, the late DJ’s brand of abuse had a chillingly transactional nature; Elvis badges, and other gifts were apparently offered in exchange for sexual favours – tiny sums of hush money to add to the institutional unwillingness to listen to stuttering confessions on the part of young girls.”

As this article points out, the rich charity he originated has done almost nothing to help the children it was set up to help:

“Despite Dr Bodley’s claim that beneficiaries will “lose out” if the Savile charities have to shut down – accounts of the Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust show that in 2010 the organisation, which has reserves of over £3.5 million, gave away just £35,000 pounds and incurred “expenses” of £25,000 in doing so. This pattern of meagre activity at high cost (even though none of the trustees receive a salary), is repeated to varying degrees in all the accounts since 2008.”

So on the one hand the unimpeachable public face of a ‘charitable benefactor’ [or Conscious Man] — on the other the hidden black outlook of a sexual deviant. The two go together hand in hand.

For those interested, I attach a link to the BBC prgramme that recently appeared:

By the way, Just where are the Real Schools?

imo the ‘REAL SCHOOL’ is the school of life… it has been said, and i would agree: “Life is the soul’s nursery – Its training place for the destinies of eternity.”

Those of us fortunate enough to have ‘graduated’ from the confining strictures imposed on the adherents of burtonism, have the possibility to realize that the school of life necessarily provides daily and endless opportunities for real learning and translating these lessons into genuine being. The unfortunates who are still waiting to matriculate to the ‘real school’ and ‘graduate’ from the mental and emotional wasteland of burtonism, don’t realize the limitations this ‘institution’ (read:cult), imposes on the individuation process and the potential for learning and for growth contained in a wider ‘curriculum.’

by following behavioral proscriptions and ‘dictates’ (pun intended) of BLOWBERT BURTON, the sheep essentially limit their possibilities and thereby stunt their own growth. burtonism is not concerned with the growth and individuation of the individual ‘student,’ burtonism is designed only to manipulate others toward the end of satisfying and feeding burton’s own greed and wanton lasciviousness. one of the dead white men he was fond of quoting wrote:

“Men possessing small souls are generally the authors of great evils.”

Burton’s soul — if he has one, doesn’t even rise to the level of ‘small’ in as much as the petty evil he perpetrates is by no means ‘great’ at all – it’s more on the level of ‘mischief’ with unfortunate consequences for those few who become entangled or trapped by his web of deception.

“Crossroads”
Lyrics

I’ve got nothing on my mind: nothing to remember,
Nothing to forget. and I’ve got nothing to regret,
But I’m all tied up on the inside,
No one knows quite what I’ve got;
And I know that on the outside
What I used to be, I’m not anymore.

You know I’ve heard about people like me,
But I never made the connection.
They walk one road to set them free
And find they’ve gone the wrong direction.

But there’s no need for turning back
`cause all roads lead to where I stand.
And I believe I’ll walk them all
No matter what I may have planned.

Can you remember who I was? can you still feel it?
Can you find my pain? can you heal it?
Then lay your hands upon me now
And cast this darkness from my soul.
You alone can light my way.
You alone can make me whole once again.

We’ve walked both sides of every street
Through all kinds of windy weather.
But that was never our defeat
As long as we could walk together.

So there’s no need for turning back
`cause all roads lead to where we stand.
And I believe we’ll walk them all
No matter what we may have planned.

…..comment on the song, by “Crossroads (meaning)” Website…..

“This is one of the most profound songs ever written.

On the surface, this is a song about the “crossroads” we all cross in our lives .. the metamorphosis we go through at various times (eg, leaving home the 1st time, graduating college & leaving friends behind, leaving a lover, etc.)

It is also about wondering if we made the correct choices in our lives .. and the acceptance that we made the choices that we were “ready” to make at those points in our lives, hence the reason we end up in the same place today .. there just wasn’t any other way.

This isn’t a long song, but it packs a wallop. A VERY PROFOUND SONG – highly recommended for the introspective at heart.

Contemplate. Be at peace, Enjoy this song.

Thank you, Don.”

“If there be nothing new, but that which is
Hath been before, how are our brains beguil’d,
Which labouring for invention bear amiss
The second burthen of a former child!
O, that record could with a backward look,
Even of five hundred courses of the sun,
Show me your image in some antique book,
Since mind at first in character was done!
That I might see what the old world could say
To this composed wonder of your frame;
Whenever we are mended, or whe’r better they
Or whether revolution be the same.
O! sure I am, the wit of former days
To subjects worse have given admiring praise.”

Adab (#130-35 or thereabouts),
thank you very much for your observations about commonalities you’ve seen in some ex-followers from the Fellowship of Friends. I felt an immediate sympathy for those thoughts, which I recognized might be confirmation bias. So, I tried recalling, thinking and writing about this theme for myself, from scratch, from a fresh as view as I could muster over the last few days, thinking of actual cases I’ve personally encountered, and, whatever, I still agree. I’m going to repeat the last of your words for whoever has ‘ears to hear’, because I think they are rather important, and hope they’ll re-read the whole post:

How hard it is to truly give up the status of a ‘seeker trying to find an answer’! It takes a long time for these beliefs to die away…. to realize that there is really no-one there.

Burton’s stream of failed prophecies and false starts with his ‘men #5′ all fail for a reason. They are based on the belief that his group as a whole, and individuals within it, are on the way towards a privileged position, internally and externally. Cold hard facts have proved otherwise. It is all Imagination.

re: 94
after re-reading abab 35, ‘adyashanti’ should at least be acknowledged, if not quoted directly… anyway, it seems germane to the situation… here and elsewhere:

“In speaking regularly with spiritual seekers, it dawned on me one day how addicted so many of them are to the power of charisma. They swap stories about how powerful this or that teacher is and compare experiences. They get a charge from it, many mistaking charisma for enlightenment. Charisma attracts at all levels: political, sexual, spiritual, etc., and IT FEEDS THE EGO”S DESIRE TO FEEL SPECIAL.” (emphases mine).

and:

“It is this search for the final liberating experience which gives rise to a rampant form of spiritual consumerism in which seekers go from one teacher to another, shopping for enlightenment as if shopping for sweets in a candy store. This spiritual promiscuity is rapidly turning the search for enlightenment into a cult of experience seekers. And, while many people indeed have powerful experiences, in most cases these do not lead to the profound transformation of the individual…”

Friday, June 8, 2012Is Robert Earl Burton a sociopath? [ed. – Reprinted with permission from NaturalNews.] How to spot a sociopath – 10 red flags that could save you from being swept under the influence of a charismatic nut job Friday, June 08, 2012 by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, Editor of NaturalNews.com (NaturalNews) One of the more offensive duties of being an investigative journalist is taking out the trash — exposing liars, fraudsters, con artists and scammers for the people they truly are. Each time we investigate a sociopath, we find that they always have a little cult group following of spellbound worshippers who consider that particular sociopath to be a “guru” or “prophet.” Sociopaths are masters at influence and deception. Very little of what they say actually checks out in terms of facts or reality, but they’re extremely skillful at making the things they say sound believable, even if they’re just making them up out of thin air. Here, I’m going to present quotes and videos of some legendary sociopaths who convinced everyday people to participate in mass suicides. And then I’m going to demonstrate how and why similar sociopaths are operating right now… today. Why cover this subject? I’ve seen a lot of people get hoodwinked, scammed or even harmed by sociopaths, and it bewilders me that people are so easily sucked into their destructive influence. I want to share with NaturalNews readers the warning signs of sociopaths so that you can spot them, avoid them, and save yourself the trouble of being unduly influenced by them. Much of this information is derived from the fascinating book, The Sociopath Next Door, which says that 4% of the population are sociopaths. The book is a fascinating read. 10 signs for spotting a sociopath #1) Sociopaths are charming. Sociopaths have high charisma and tend to attract a following just because people want to be around them. They have a “glow” about them that attracts people who typically seek guidance or direction. They often appear to be sexy or have a strong sexual attraction. Not all sexy people are sociopaths, obviously, but watch out for over-the-top sexual appetites and weird fetishes. #2) Sociopaths are more spontaneous and intense than other people. They tend to do bizarre, sometimes erratic things that most regular people wouldn’t do. They are unbound by normal social contracts. Their behavior often seems irrational or extremely risky. #3) Sociopaths are incapable of feeling shame, guilt or remorse. Their brains simply lack the circuitry to process such emotions. This allows them to betray people, threaten people or harm people without giving it a second thought. They pursue any action that serves their own self interest even if it seriously harms others. #4) Sociopaths invent outrageous lies about their experiences. They wildly exaggerate things to the point of absurdity, but when they describe it to you in a storytelling format, for some reason it sounds believable at the time. #5) Sociopaths seek to dominate others and “win” at all costs. They hate to lose any argument or fight and will viciously defend their web of lies, even to the point of logical absurdity. #6) Sociopaths tend to be highly intelligent, but they use their brainpower to deceive others rather than empower them. Their high IQs often makes them dangerous. This is why many of the best-known serial killers who successfully evaded law enforcement were sociopaths. #7) Sociopaths are incapable of love and are entirely self-serving. They may feign love or compassion in order to get what they want, but they don’t actually FEEL love in the way that you or I do. #8) Sociopaths speak poetically. They are master wordsmiths, able to deliver a running “stream of consciousness” monologue that is both intriguing and hypnotic. They are expert storytellers and even poets. As a great example of this in action, watch this interview of Charles Manson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIfGj_55FHI #9) Sociopaths never apologize. They are never wrong. They never feel guilt. They can never apologize. Even if shown proof that they were wrong, they will refuse to apologize and instead go on the attack. #10) Sociopaths are delusional and literally believe that what they say becomes truth merely because they say it! Charles Manson, the sociopathic murderer, is famous for saying, “I’ve never killed anyone! I don’t need to kill anyone! I THINK it! I have it HERE! (Pointing to his temple.) I don’t need to live in this physical realm…”

Sorry – the last post went to ‘post comment’ before editing. Hope it reads ok. It is from “Robert Earl Burton – An Unauthorized Blogography”…..Nigel.

100. Shard_of_Oblivion - October 14, 2012

I just remembered an old feeling, maybe I wasn’t the only one. You know how there were the nominated 44 conscious beings. There were a couple of cultural figures that I “wanted” to be conscious. (The appalling banality of this seems so obvious now, as if their art was somehow enhanced if Robert Burton had said the artist was conscious)

So now I offer the blog a sample of one of my old “wish he was conscious” beings, Beethoven, the masterpiece that is op111 played by Annie Fischer as if her life depended on it. In Kurt Vonnegut’s terms Beethoven by Burton’s assessment was some of the mud that never got to sit up and look around. I append the full Vonnegut quote.

God made mud.
God got lonesome.
So God said to some of the mud, “Sit up!”
“See all I’ve made,” said God, “the hills, the sea, the
sky, the stars.”
And I was some of the mud that got to sit up and look
around.
Lucky me, lucky mud.
I, mud, sat up and saw what a nice job God had done.
Nice going, God.
Nobody but you could have done it, God! I certainly
couldn’t have.
I feel very unimportant compared to You.
The only way I can feel the least bit important is to
think of all the mud that didn’t even get to sit up and
look around.
I got so much, and most mud got so little.
Thank you for the honor!
Now mud lies down again and goes to sleep.
What memories for mud to have!
What interesting other kinds of sitting-up mud I met!
I loved everything I saw!

85 Adab had posted a link to a BBC investigation into Jimmy Saville. Through interviews with two very different groups of people — male colleagues who met with Saville for business reasons many decades ago and saw him consorting with 12-14 year old girls that struck them as doubly inappropriate because of the business setting, and female victims who were too ashamed to speak up when he forced himself on them many decades ago — you begin to see how society sometimes colludes in predatory sexual behavior that we all know is wrong in some way.

Shame is a great inhibitor, and sexual predators use their victims’ sense of shame in a way that allows them to continue on. It should make one question why the group of young men that Robert consorts with are such a closed and skittish group who do not engage openly with other FF students. It is not really that they feel like the new “elite” in the sense of being in a spiritual inner circle. It is that they know they are colluding in something.

Not all sexual predators have the outsized public persona or position as did/do Saville, Sandusky and Robert. Saville’s and Sandusky’s charity activities gave cover as well as supplied them with a victim pool of youth. Robert’s cover is that he says he’s a goddess in a man’s body. All of these covers serve to confuse everyone, including those looking at it from the outside. As for Robert’s victim pools, the very people in the FF who should protect incoming new students are the ones grooming “appropriate-looking young men,” especially those who are financially vulnerable or desperate to come to America.

Even if you set aside the issue of Saville’s and Sandusky’s victims being underage and Robert’s not (ecept for TB, that we know of), the heart of the issue is reluctant participation where the victim knows there is something wrong going on. That the shame which results stays in one’s emotional life for a long time, attests to its power. If you’ve never had that happen to you in any way, shape or form, then it may be hard to understand the power of sexual shame. It does not necessarily have to do with your age. You did not have to be raped.

Conversely, if you were 14 when you chose to have sex with someone you lusted after, that is different from having a man in a position of public power foist himself on you where you felt compelled to cooperate, even if you were at the age of consent, 18. It gets more complicated when the predator is homosexual and victimizes heterosexual boys or young men, because the feeling of something distinctly “unnatural” happening compounds the shame. The public’s perception of the predator’s public social activities as being “for the public good” only serves to prevent the victims from speaking up openly and being believed.

If it’s too hard to relate to what Robert does sexually, then the subject of money should resonate. Many who left the FF who were untouched by Robert’s sexual activities, nevertheless felt very foolish for having poured so much money into it by way of teaching payments. The primary feeling is one of regret that one had given so much money for such a long time. Again, shame inhibits one from disclosing to non-FF people how much money one had funnelled to the FF, much of it unwillingly. Checks are written as a duty, and not necessarily cheerfully. If the FF knew it could depend on voluntary donations, it would not use the threat of fines for rejoining and ostracization to pressure its members.

I have a lady student (3 years my junior) who, although she makes her living as a photographer and graphic designer (we barter photographic work for classes), volunteers on a ‘Rape Crisis Hotline’. She offers helpful advice over the telephone to, mostly, women but some men who have been rape victims. She states that many were child victims who have only now been able to reach out for help with their ‘torn feelings’. She was ‘scarily interested’ to find out that the length of time from the actual rape to being able to contact help is because, in many cases, THE VICTIMS FEEL GUILT AND SELF-BLAME. She also, definitely, mentioned the word ‘cult’. So you can see how Burton has his harem at a distinct disadvantage as regards the victims being able to extricate themselves from the situation ‘as a boy’ and to adjust to a new life. I wonder if Whale Rider and others with mental health authorities can shed light on the feelings of these young men…..Nigel.

The Fellowship of Friends pleads ignorance, innocence:

Yuba County’s Fellowship of Friends decry fed’s pot busts

By Ryan McCarthy
Appeal-Democrat
2012-10-12 23:16:30

Several Fellowship of Friends members in Yuba County are involved in marijuana trafficking and use proceeds to pay the religious organization, asserts a federal court filing that the Fellowship president says is false.

“It may even border on religious hate crimes,” Gregory Holman said of the search warrant affidavit filed last week in US District Court in Sacramento. “In other drug affidavits, do you say someone is a Catholic or a Baptist?

Click here to read the search warrant.

The Fellowship, described in the warrant as “a sect of Mystical ‘Fourth-Way’ Christianity based upon the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff” and founded by Robert Burton in the 1970s, is based at a 1,250-acre site in Oregon House.

The search warrant states that a confidential source said it was common knowledge in the foothills that several Fellowship members supported themselves, and paid the required tenth of their income or $400 a month, by cultivating marijuana on properties surrounding the religious compound. The payments impose a financial burden on Fellowship members with limited resources in an area with few jobs, adds the warrant by a Drug Enforcement Administration special agent.

A German resident who moved here to join the Fellowship routinely has more than $100,000 in cash at his home from marijuana sales, according to the confidential source cited in the document.

“People within the Fellowship of Friends, including the leaders of the organization, knew how these people were obtaining the money they were providing,” the source told the DEA, but “nobody seemed to care.”

Holman responded, “We have no knowledge of any such thing.”

“We condone no illegal activity,” he said.

#103. Search Warrant documentation.

So – there is an informant referred to as CS in the affadavit, who has put the boot in. CS knew these people very well, and it sounds like they are/were a student. I personally deplore the war of drugs so wish all the cultivators good luck. It seems the source of their downfall is forgetting about google earth (the agent was able to conduct a good part of his investigation sitting in his office using his PC!), and not being careful about keeping it relatively secret within the FoF. For these errors they may well pay a very heavy price.

But in the end the case reads like a parable about the consequences of greed for the whole FoF institution.

109. brucelevy - October 15, 2012

The warrant indicates that the FOF property is one of the venues to be searched. All records, books pertaining to financial transactions can be seized under the warrant from what I can see. This is outstanding. I would imagine that if they’re sharp enough they’ll also pick up on all the other illegal shit going down (FBI, INS etc.).

110. brucelevy - October 15, 2012

Fanfuckingtastic.

111. jomopinata - October 15, 2012

It’d be interesting to know what was actually seized. The warrant had to be executed prior to or on October 3. Anyone have local scuttlebut?

112. Tim Campion - October 15, 2012

I’ll bet “I in the sky” could provide some details.

113. Tim Campion - October 15, 2012

On second thought, maybe “I in the sky” was the CS. They relied heavily on aerial surveys.

114. jomopinata - October 15, 2012

“CS” in affidavits supporting search warrants typically stands for “Confidential Source.”

115. Ames Gilbert - October 15, 2012

Bruce (#130-109 or thereabouts),
AFAIK, the “Fellowship property” is actually made up of a number of separate parcels, and the one mentioned in the ‘Application for Search Warrant’ may not be the one that houses any records. Not to mention that the “Ouspensky Office” (or its modern equivalent) and hence official records has been off the ‘Property’ (at 12585, 12587, 12607 Rice’s Crossing Road, etc.) for decades. Same with legal records. Some will be at the Office, some at Abraham Goldman Partners office (12896 RCR), some at Abraham Goldman’s house or in the storage shed behind the house. And maybe in (lots of) other places.
Maybe it’s my browser, maybe it’s my Mac, but the Yuba County assessor’s parcel lookup isn’t working for me, so I can’t check the location of that particular parcel number on their GIS system. Can you?

C-Influence are very clever and very powerful, and no doubt are exerting themselves to protect their favorites right now. Or did they figure it all out when they ‘wrote the play’ at the beginning of eternity? It’s so terribly confusing for a simple mind like mine!

I feel sorry for anyone busted under our insane drug laws, at least for marijuana. What a waste of money, talent and manpower that could be better used elsewhere! Not to mention costs of prison! We all get to pay for the bloated ‘industrial-prison-justice’ complex. How about going after the financial fraudsters, banksters and other wreckers of the economy, and so many others more deserving of attention . . . ?

116. Agent 4T5 - October 15, 2012

Like Malcom X used to say, it’s some cool shit when the chickens come home to roost. By the way, it’s a long standing pattern of plausible deniability that the Fellowship doesn’t know about or condone any illegal activity. I remember the olden days when a few members were earning their livelihood dealing coke & smoke. Karl Werner said that it was not the Fellowship’s business how members got the money to make their payments. Turn about is fair play, suckers.

117. WhaleRider - October 15, 2012

Rather than the war on drugs, since the end user is not being targeted here, you could think of it as the war on money laundering and tax evasion.

3-5 plants in your back yard or basement for personal home use isn’t going to bring the IRS, the DEA and Homeland Security knocking on your door.

If you can, go to Google Earth, type in the addresses listed in the warrant, and from the descriptions of the locations provided, you can still see the pot gardens in the satellite images.

It was vindicating to read in the warrant that that the agent researched the Fellowship online and found that “the group was labeled as a cult by former members and cult-watch websites”.

Great work people.

Hopefully the final scenes of the Fellowship of Friends will be entitled, “the Rico Act”.

118. Tempus Fugit - October 15, 2012

Thank you jomopinata, Tim Campion, and James Mclemore.

I trust officer Nehring has been fully informed by “CS” that Robert Burton is unlikely to be ignorant of anything significant that involves large sums of money under the control of his “students.”

This is the best news I’ve heard about the FOF in years. Perhaps payment will soon be made for the suffering of so many for so long and the suffering of many more averted forever.

Anyone seen a license plate lately that reads B-A-D K-A-R-M-A?

There is a lively local community discussion of the article in the Appeal-Democrat. This one from a Stephan Black caught my eye:

“Stephan Black
Lucy Adams yeah just remember the old saying about how half of what you hear is true etc. certainly applies in this case. Much of it is generated by ex members and is not rational of reasonable”

Not rational eh Stephan? mmmm.

121. brucelevy - October 15, 2012

Yeah well Stephan Black…if he’s the SB I remember he was always a douche and jonnie-be-good. And if he isn’t the one I remember, he’s still a douche.

122. Shard_of_Oblivion - October 15, 2012

#120 Bruce knows the guy!

So he wouldn’t have been sampling the special zero zero fine sieved hashish they were producing in the new barn then? Wonder what they called their most potent product? “Cock of Apollo” perhaps?😉

123. brucelevy - October 15, 2012

It’s interesting, the sheep and apologists that are crawling from under their rocks to defend this abomination in the Appeal Democrat. They have nothing, so they’re attacking the messenger, and leaving nothing of substance except the implications that all the bad news is the result of disgruntled ex-members. Their usual line of horse shit. But Tim has left the address of both pertinent sites.

Rock on Tim.

124. WhaleRider - October 15, 2012

And of course a connoisseur of super fine sufi-grade hashish would never stoop so low as to draw that thick harsh smoke into their sacred lungs as do the heathens…heavens no! The Koran forbids it.

According to spokesfollower Gregory Holman, the Fellowship maintains a strict “no smoking it” policy.

Also…“Holman responded, “We have no knowledge of any such thing.””

Right.

This “real school” of esoteric mysticism “headquartered” in the Emerald Triangle of Northern Frickin California has absolutely no knowledge of any such traditional (or contemporary) mood altering substances and compounds which put one in touch with one’s Higher Self.

Oh and please pass the honey. It gives a nice little lift to your morning toast.

And BTW, have you tried their other angel-grade super fine olive oils, too?

125. Ames Gilbert - October 15, 2012

GREETINGS to anyone coming to these pages as a result of reading the Appeal-Democrat.

Stephan Black, a current member of the Fellowship of Friends, and long-time follower of Burton (since 1979), commented on the story thus: “Lucy Adams yeah just remember the old saying about how half of what you hear is true etc. certainly applies in this case. Much of it is generated by ex members and is not rational of reasonable“.
Well, this blog is one place where some ex-members and present members, and even folks who never were members, most of them anonymous, argue about what is rational and reasonable.
One of the present members has been posting quite frequently of late. Look for comments by “I in the Sky” to get an idea of what a typical follower thinks about certain subjects.

“I in the Sky” has never argued about the substance of some facts, merely the interpretation.
Facts such as:
• Robert Earl Burton demands sex from any heterosexual male followers he finds attractive. He uses phrases such as, “I am an angel in a man’s body” and “C-Influence (angels) want you to have sex with me” to persuade them.
• Robert Earl Burton has made frequent predictions about the coming Armageddon. He claims that the members of the Fellowship of Friends will be the sole survivors, and their task will be to begin a new civilization. The last date was 2006, the next one is December 21, 2012. Not long to go! There were a few stabs at getting it right in between.
• Robert Earl Burton has made frequent statements about his wonderfulness, along the lines of, “I am the Brightest Light in 2,000 years”. According to him, he is now only slightly less than Christ, but he’s working on it.
• Robert Earl Burton claims that he and his followers have the help of 44 angels, and that he is in constant communication with him. He hears their voices and also they communicate with him by arranging signs, portents and omens, which he interprets. However, they also give him wrong messages (such as the dates of Armageddon), which are designed by these angels to humiliate him.
• Robert Earl Burton claims that every member of the Fellowship of Friends who is current with their payments will be saved, and is on a path that will lead to eternal life, though this path may take many lifetimes.
• And so on. As I said, “I in the Sky” does argue about the interpretation . . .
If you care to read these pages, you’ll get the idea. There’s a whole lot more. And you’ll get a good idea where the average present member of the Fellowship of Friends, like Stephan Black, is coming from, because from time to time they do step forward and defend their views. Of course, to get their official viewpoint, go to their website, listed at the top of this and every page. Fair’s fair! Not that they return the courtesy, of course.

If you find the sheer amount of material too daunting (130 pages, 45,000 comments!), then try:

where there is rather less to go through, and a totally different way of organizing the information.

Enjoy! And by all means come back here and tell us what you think!

Let’s take an imaginative nanodrone journey looking and listening to the current goings on in the Galleria. As our insectile spy machine settles in the inner sanctum Robert Burton is having a post dinner chat with “I in the sky” – one of his most trusted aides.

rb “Dear – come with me, I would like to have a little chat”

i “Of course Robert”

rb “Tell me, i, how is our little gambit of you posing as a voice of reason on the blog working out?”

i “It’s going really well Robert, those ex students are tying themselves in knots, trying to cope with my penetrating logic and disarming honesty.”

rb “Dear, I am sure you are able to cope with their formatory and deluded angles. Your role is that of the archetypical hero, like a martial artist in a Kung Fu film, where the one good warrier can take on and defeat a whole army of the bad guys. The Gods will only allow the school to be besmirched if that is the play, and you are their agent in this task”

i “well there is one thing, Robert, they do rather focus in on your sex life. But you have never really found a moment to put me in the picture about that. It may help me defend the school if I understood it a bit better”

At this point a simpering catemite silently enters the room.

rb “Not now Sebastian dear, and let the doorman know I am in camera now”

Sebastian “хороший, Robert”

rb “Dear go over and lock that door would you?”

i “Certainly Robert”

rb “Once that door is locked, we are in the land of essence and higher centres, and world 96 is unable to intrude on our precious time together”

i “So what is supersex Robert, and how does it benefit your lovers?”

rb “Well dear, my higher centres are these days almost entirely occupied with the energies of world 6, these are literally unimaginably overwhelming and I need a certain extremely refined substance to enable me to contain them and fulfill my precious role. As you know, C influence cast my role in a man’s body even though my higher centres are female. One might call it cruel, but as you know dear, the gods spare no one in working out their destiny, and I carry this heavy burden for my students and higher school. What C influence have told me is that I have to humiliate myself by drinking the precious essences of young men who themselves are normal and fitted with natural lusts and appetites. What you may not have realised is that world 6 has an extraordinary effect on the lower machine, and in particular on the sex organs, so that they are utterly transformed from the crude animal pleasure centres of life people, to a supreme organ of perception, in effect the third eye.”

i “And the benefit for your lovers Robert?”

rb “Well dear, I don’t think these things can be put into words. Come and sit close to me here on the couch. Even though my lower machine is male, my desires are celestial/female, and I can give you a practical demonstration of that”

With those words Burton whips out his little todger which hangs limply down his elegant Armani boxer shorts.

rb “Dear, C influence have indicated to me that you are now ready to receive my sex in your mouth, and they want you to do this for your evolution”

i blanches somewhat – this is not what she expected at all.

i “Ok Robert, I think you have in fact explained the situation very well, I really don’t think I need any further tutelage”

rb “i, C influence have indicated to me that this is your destiny, you will learn so much from this”

i is wondering if Burton is joking, he has never ever acted in this way towards her before. On the other hand – maybe he is right, and this is her destiny, to be the only female apart from Bonita who gets to have sex with Robert. And he is now a man 7.8 whereas he was only a 5.13 when he fucked Bonita.

What next?

Will i get to experience supersex with a 2000 year old goddess?

Interesting to poke around in the case law of forfeiture involving lands forfeited on account of being used for marijuana cultivation where the owner claimed to lack knowledge or to have refused consent. This is from a Tenth Circuit case (California is in the Ninth Circuit):

“Title 21 of the United States Code authorizes forfeiture of “[a]ll real property . . . which is used, or intended to be used, in any manner or part, to commit, or to facilitate the commission of, a violation of this subchapter punishable by more than one year’s imprisonment.” 21 U.S.C. 881(a)(7). However, the statute provides for an affirmative defense, which has come to be known as the “innocent owner defense.” Ms. Scott concedes that the property was used in violation of federal drug laws. The only question on appeal is whether Ms. Scott presented sufficient evidence of innocent ownership to survive summary judgment.

At the time that these proceedings commenced, the statute required an owner who invoked the affirmative defense to prove by a preponderance of the evidence that the illegal acts were committed “without the knowledge or consent of that owner.” 21 U.S.C. 881(a)(7)1; United States v. 9844 S. Titan Court, Unit 9, 75 F.3d 1470, 1477 (10th Cir. 1996), overruled on other grounds, United States v. Ursery, 518 U.S. 267 (1996). The circuits are split as to whether the statute requires an innocent owner to prove both a lack of knowledge and a lack of consent, or either a lack of knowledge or a lack of consent. Compare United States v. One Single Family Residence Located at 6960 Miraflores Ave., 995 F.2d 1558, 1561 (11th Cir. 1993) (adopting the conjunctive approach), with United States v. 141st St. Corp., 911 F.2d 870, 877-78 (2d Cir. 1990) (adopting the disjunctive approach). Both parties urge us to address this question. Ms. Scott argues that the statute is to be read disjunctively, requiring an innocent owner to prove a lack of either knowledge or consent. The United States disagrees, arguing that the statute should be read conjunctively. However, because we hold that Ms. Scott both knew of and consented to the drug activity on her property, we need not address the disjunctive/conjunctive debate.

Because the innocent owner defense is an affirmative defense, it is not incumbent upon the government to prove that the owner had knowledge of the illegal activity. Rather, “it is the claimant’s responsibility to prove the absence of actual knowledge.” United States v. Four Million, Two Hundred Fifty- Five Thousand, Six Hundred & Twenty-five Dollars & Thirty-Nine Cents, 762 F.2d 895, 907 (11th Cir. 1985). Moreover, we are not constrained to accept denials supported by a mere scintilla of evidence. Such bare denials for example, where the defendant’s alleged ignorance amounts to willful blindness, or where the owner’s claims of ignorance are “inconsistent with the uncontested facts” are insufficient to create a genuine triable issue. United States v. One Parcel of Prop., Located at 755 Forrest Rd., 985 F.2d 70, 72-73 (2d Cir. 1993); see also United States v. Parcel of Land & Residence at 5 Bell Rock Rd., 896 F.2d 605, 611 (1st Cir. 1990) (a “merely colorable” affidavit is insufficient as a matter of law to avoid summary judgment).”

Ozella Scott, Claimant-Appellant, 275 F.3d 1281 (10th Cir. 2002).

Here’s a U.S. District Court forfeiture case from So. Cal., last year, which quotes relevant standards which the government must meet and which an “innocent owner” must meet to avoid forfeiture once the government has met its burdens: http://bit.ly/ToUtwp

What a relief to have a break from the insanity of I in the sky and Joseph N.

I wonder if they feel the same? What a relief from all that fact checking and confrontation.

We were discussing this word – obstrusive – when I was making coffee at the evening class tonight and the song – “Another Cup of Coffee” by Mike and the Mechanics played on the music center. It seems obvious that the Fellowship has got itself into a ‘mess of drug-worthiness’ and this may lead to more investigations being made…..Nigel.

I’d say the legality of maryjane is a separate issue. Don’t look a gift camel in the mouth; the pot bust opens to door for authorities to look into the whole Fellowship house-o-cards. Al Capone was jailed for income tax evasion not alcohol smuggling or murder. I hope they seize everything and harass the leaders to their graves. Religious freedom, my ass.

It sounds like Marijuana is a big part of the local economy in Oregon House. I hope that the various community growers don’t have their lives too unsettled by all this. It is a real opportunity, though, as Agent 45 has said, for the authorities to take a closer look at the Fellowship and its tax exempt status as a charitable foundation; it really isn’t, after all. So many of the students donations are used for only one person’s profit and benefit.

Affidavit of DEA Special Agent Brian Nehring In Support of a Search Warrant

I, Brian Nehring, being duly sworn state the following:

Background and Expertise

1. I am a Special Agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), San Francisco Field Division, and have been so employed since 1991. I have had numerous assignments since beginning with DEA, including being assigned to the Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement Team from 1997 to 1999, the Oakland Resident Office between 1999 and 2002, and the Mobile Enforcement Team (MET) between 2002 and 2004. I have been assigned to the Sacramento Division Office since September of 2004.

2. I have received specialized training in narcotic investigation matters including, but not limited to, drug interdiction, drug detection, money laundering techniques and schemes, drug identification, and asset identification and removal, from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In addition, I graduated from the DEA Basic Agents Academy at the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia. In total, I have received in excess of 500 hours of comprehensive formalized classroom instruction in those areas outlined above.

3. I have assisted in the execution of more than four hundred (400) warrants to search particular places or premises for controlled substances and/or related paraphernalia, indicia and other evidence of violations of federal drug narcotics statutes. As a result, I have encountered and become familiar with various tools, methods, trends, and paraphernalia and related articles utilized by traffickers in their efforts to import, conceal, manufacture and distribute controlled substances. Central to all trafficking efforts, regardless of the drug, is the traffickers’ effort to make a profit from those dealings or transactions, either for the purchase of additional substances or material gain. I have been actively involved as case agent in excess of two hundred (200) investigations and have talked with confidential informants involved in the trafficking of narcotics, and this has formed the basis of my opinions.

4. I have been qualified as and have testified as an expert witness in both federal and state court in the Northern and Eastern Districts of California and in counties including Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano and others. These areas of qualification, have included possession for sale, possession with intent to distribute, manufacturing of a controlled substance and cultivation.

Page 3 continues:

As explained further below, during 2012, I received information that over the last several years that Andreas JEWERS had organized a group of individuals, who lived in Oregon House, California, into a marijuana.cultivation and distribution group. The individuals involved in the marijuana trafficking are members of an organization called The Fellowship of Friends. The individuals working with JEWERS are involved in growing marijuana on the respective properties in Yuba County. JEWERS, in turn, is distributing large amounts of marijuana on their behalf to customers outside of California. I identified the properties owned by these individuals and during aerial and ground surveillance during August and September of 2012 verified that there were currently ongoing outdoor marijuana gardens clearly visible on all of these properties. Therefore, I am requesting search warrants be authorized for these properties in order to locate the items listed in Attachment B which I believe are evidence of the Manufacture and Distribution of Marijuana, and Conspiracy, in violation of 21 U.S.C. §§ 846 and 841(a)(1).

Background of Investigation

6. In 2012, I spoke with a Confidential Source (“CS”) regarding the Andreas JEWERS marijuana trafficking organization. The CS has no prior criminal record, has no pending criminal cases, and was not providing information in hopes of receiving consideration in any pending case and did not request any financial reward or compensation. The CS’s descriptions of marijuana cultivation and trafficking are consistent with my training and experience in this area. I am not aware of the CS providing false or misleading information. In addition, I have been able to verily the CS’s information through multiple database records and checks, as well as my own

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 4 of 27

investigation and observations. For these reasons, I believe the CS’s information is reliable. The CS provided the following information.

Background on Fellowship of Friends

7. The CS said Andreas JEWERS was a German National who had moved to Oregon House several years ago to become an active member of an organization known as The Fellowship of Friends. This group is a self-described sect of Mystical “Fourth-Way” Christianity based upon the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff, and which was founded by an individual named Robert BURTON in the 1970’s. The Fellowship of Friends established a main center in Oregon House which is now also operated as a winery (Renaissance Winery) and olive oil business [Apollo Olive Oil]. According to the CS, the Fellowship of Friends has established numerous satellite centers overseas which recruit foreign members, many of whom subsequently move to Oregon House to be near the main center, known as Apollo. According to the CS, there are numerous foreign-national members of the Fellowship of Friends, like JEWERS, living in the area to be near BURTON and to participate in the organization and the operation of the affiliated businesses. The CS said members of this group follow BURTON as a “Guru” and are required to pay either of tenth of their income or $400 per month to the Fellowship of Friends. Followers are required to pay additional amounts in order to spend time with BURTON. I subsequently performed many database and Internet searches. This research confirmed much of what the CS related regarding the Fellowship of Friends. I learned that this group was labeled as a “cult” by many former members and cult-watch websites.

8. The CS related that participating in the Fellowship of Friends entailed a large financial obligation with the monthly fees, tutoring fees, fees in order to attend functions and meet with BURTON, special request fees for special projects such as the recent addition of an outdoor amphitheater [which, BTW, was built without county permits], and all these fees imposed a financial burden on people who had limited resources in an area that didn’t have many available jobs. The CS said it had become common knowledge in the community during recent years that several active members of the Fellowship of Friends were supporting themselves and financing their obligations and discretionary payments to the Fellowship of Friends through the cultivation of marijuana on properties surrounding the Fellowship of Friends compound in Oregon House.

9. The CS related that people within the Fellowship of Friends, including the leaders of the organization, knew how these people were obtaining the money they were providing to the Fellowship of Friends but that nobody seemed to care. The CS related that when the Fellowship of Friends compound was originally purchased and before it was utilized as a vineyard, certain founding members had utilized this property at the end of Rices Crossing Road as a location to grow large amounts of marijuana. The CS stated that one of the primary Fellowship of Friends members involved in growing marijuana on the Fellowship of Friends property was Grant RAMEY and that years ago he had grown marijuana in the hills along the north end of the Fellowship of Friends property. The CS stated that RAMEY was allegedly

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 5 of 27

currently operating his own wine business and was living in a house along the north end of the property along Rices Crossing Road.

Information about JEWERS and his Criminal Activities

10. The CS stated that JEWERS owned the property at 9305 Sweetwater Trail, Oregon House, California. JEWERS previously made a living as a back-hoe operator. In recent years, JEWERS began cultivating marijuana on this property in both a large outdoor garden and inside a trailer. The CS stated that JEWERS claimed to be distributing this marijuana out of state to various customers utilizing drivers and commercial shipping companies. The CS said JEWERS routinely had large amounts of U.S. currency, over $100,000, from the sales of marijuana inside his residence on the property. The CS also said JEWERS was regularly armed with a firearm (a pistol) which he took with him most places. According to the CS, during 2012, he/she observed a large marijuana outdoor marijuana garden at JEWERS’s property on Sweetwater Trail. The CS also related that, in 2012, JEWERS claimed he spent $50,000 to build a very large new two-story barn along the fiont of the property. JEWERS indicated the purpose of the barn was to block the view from the main road onto the property and to prevent people from seeing the marijuana garden. According to the CS, JEWERS and his co-conspirators were routinely traveling to Mexico and Hawaii for vacations when it was not marijuana season.

11. I verified through property records that 9305 Sweetwater Trail, Oregon House, California (Yuba APN#048-240-058), was an approximately 15-acre property owned by Andreas and Nancy JEWERS. I also verified through inquiries with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that JEWERS had provided this same address as a residential address to the DMV. I made inquiries with Yuba County and learned that, in early 2012, JEWERS had applied for a license to erect a barn structure at 9305 Sweetwater Trail in Oregon House. In connection with that license, JEWERS indicated the construction cost was over $40,000. I then examined Google
Earth Satellite photograph of 9305 Sweetwater Trail in Oregon House. The photograph indicated it was taken in 2011. In examining the photograph, I observed that there appeared to have been a large outdoor marijuana garden on the property during the satellite photograph in 2011.

12. In June of 2012, I traveled to 9305 Sweetwater Trail in Oregon House and, from the road, I observed a new large barn-like structure directly in front of the main gate leading onto the property, blocking the direct view into the property from the road. As I traveled south on Sweetwater Trail, I was still able to observe and photograph marijuana plants in a clearing area on the opposite side (west side) of the barn.

13. During August and September of 2012, I arranged for the DEA Airwing, the California Highway Patrol, and the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department to all conduct aerial surveillance of 9305 Sweetwater Trail, Oregon House, and to video and photograph the property at various times, up through September 8, 2012. I examined

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 6 of 27

the video and the photographs from this aerial surveillance and observed there were ongoing outdoor marijuana gardens in clearings along the south side of the property. The gardens appeared very similar to those revealed by satellite imagery from 2011.

Other Conspirators Involved in Marijuana Trafficking with JEWERS

14. The CS provided additional information that JEWERS was close friends with several other members of the Fellowship of Friends, including Juan Jose DOMINGO, John GALLAGHER, Tristan WINKS, and Elizabeth STEFANI. The CS related that these people grew marijuana on their own properties in and around Oregon House and provided this marijuana to JEWERS. According to the CS, JEWES had the customers out of state to sell the marijuana. The CS said this had been going on for years. The CS identified several other members of the Fellowship of Friends who were involved in JEWERS organization as transporters, distributors, and facilitators,. The CS said, however, that aside from one other person outside of Yuba County, DOMINGO, STEFANI, WINKS and GALLAGHER were the people that the CS knew were growing marijuana on their own properties. I subsequently displayed DMV driver’s license photographs of JEWERS, DOMINGO, STEFANI, GALLAGHER and WINKS to the CS amongst other DMV driver’s license photographs without identifying the persons pictured. The CS correctly identified all of the individuals involved in this investigation.

15. According to the CS, DOMINGO was originally from Spain and had come to Oregon House to participate in the Fellowship of Friends. DOMINGO and his common-law wife, Elizabeth “Eve” STEFANI, operated an organic farm on Nadowa Trail in Oregon House. The CS stated that there was allegedly a large marijuana grow and greenhouses on the backside of the property behind the orchards and fields in front and that every year DOMINGO and JEWERS organized a work crew to help harvest and manicure this marijuana. The CS stated that DOMINGO and STEFANI sold their produce at farmers markets and to restaurants, and that STEFANI allegedly owned a separate property in Oregon House where they also grew produce.

16. I verified through property records that 9156 Nadowa Trail, Oregon House, California (Yuba APN#D48-050-012) was an approximately 10-acre property owned by Juan Jose DOMINGO. Business records revealed that DOMINGO and Elizabeth STEFANI were listed as operators of FILAKI FARMS, LLC, with a business address of 9156 Nadow Trail, Oregon House. I conducted internet searches relating to FILAKI FARMS and observed photographs of individuals I recognized from DMV photos as DOMINGO and STEFANI growing and selling produce and representing themselves as FILAKI FARMS. I also verified through inquiries with the DMV that DOMINGO had provided 9156 Nadowa Trail, Oregon House, as a residential address to the DMV. I then examined Google Earth Satellite photograph of 9156 Nadowa in Oregon House. The satellite photograph was marked as having been taken in 2011. I observed there appeared to have been a large outdoor marijuana garden on the property at that time. This marijuana garden was located behind the tree line on the

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 7 of 27

east side of the property, whereas the orchard and fields were located along the front of the property, and there appeared to be at least one long, domed greenhouse. This is approximately the same area described by the CS.

17. I also verified through property records that 13691 Concord Trail, Oregon House, California (Yuba County APN#048-090-031) was an approximately 5-acre property owned by Elizabeth STEFANI. I then examined Google Earth Satellite photograph of 13961 Concord Trail in Oregon House. The satellite photograph is dated as having been taken in 2011. I observed that there appeared to have been a large outdoor marijuana garden on the property at that time in a fenced-in area along the north side of the property behind the one apparent house at the front of the property.

18. During August and September of 2012, I arranged for the DEA Airwing, the CHP and the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department to all conduct aerial surveillance of 9156 Nadowa Trail in Oregon House and 13691 Concord Trail in Oregon House. I asked them to video and photograph the properties during various times, up through September 8, 2012. I then examined the video and.the photographs from this aerial surveillance and observed that there were ongoing outdoor marijuana gardens on both properties. I noted the marijuana gardens were very similar to the earlier marijuana gardens captured by satellite imagery during 2011.

19. The CS related that John GALLAGHER was originally from Ireland and had come to Oregon House to participate in the Fellowship of Friends. GALLAGHER subsequently became friends with JEWERS. The CS related that GALLAGHER lived at a property on Yuba Ranch Way in Oregon House and supposedly had several employees whom he utilized to assist in growing marijuana in the tree line along the south side of the property. GALLAGHER allegedly had some of his own marijuana customers, but gave the bulk of the marijuana he harvested to JEWERS in order to be sold out of state.

20. I verified through property records that 9500 Yuba Ranch Way, Oregon House, California (Yuba APN#048-070-020) was an approximately 15-acre property owned by John GALLAGHER. I also verified through inquiries with the DMV that, in the past, both JEWERS and GALLAGHER had provided this same address (P.O. Box 500, Oregon House, Califomia) to the DMV. I then examined Google Earth Satellite photograph of 9500 Yuba Ranch Way in Oregon House. The satellite photograph was dated as having been taken in 2011. I observed there appeared to have been a large outdoor marijuana garden on the property at the time of the 2011 satellite photograph. I noted this photo showed a large clearing in the tree line along the south side of the property in the same. general area described by the CS.

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 8 of 27

21. During August and September of 2012, I arranged for the DEA Airwing, the CHP, and the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department to all conduct aerial surveillance of 9500 Yuba Ranch Way in Oregon House, and to video and photograph the property at various times, up through September 8, 2012. I examined the video and the photographs from this aerial surveillance and observed that there were ongoing outdoor marijuana gardens in clearings along the south side of the property. The location and appearance of the marijuana gardens were very similar to the gardens observed in the 2011 satellite imagery.

22. I also spoke to Yuba County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Heath. Deputy Heath patrols the Oregon House area and conducts the marijuana enforcement program in that area. Deputy Heath related to me that he had recently spoken to a citizen informant. According to Deputy Heath’s citizen informant, GALLAGHER was currently utilizing the barn on this property as a location for manufacturing hashish and “honey oil.” Honey oil is a product created with THC extracted from marijuana and suspended in Butane. The citizen informant told Deputy Heath that GALLAGHER was the largest purveyor of these products in the area.

23. The CS said Tristan WINKS was a younger member of the JEWERS organization. WINKS grew up as the child of Fellowship of Friends members and resided in the area. The CS said WINKS owned his own property somewhere in Oregon House and claimed to be growing large amounts of marijuana over the last few years. WINKS and JEWERS had both mentioned in the past that they were working together in the cultivation and distribution of marijuana and that they were partners in sending marijuana. The CS identified the JEWERS-WINKS distribution of marijuana as specifically being focused on New Mexico. The CS related that JEWERS and WINKS had recently supposedly had a falling out over a large amount of money and a shared girlfriend, but, the CS believed they would probably still be working together in the harvest and distribution of marijuana.

24. I verified through property records that 8146 Sunnyside Lane, Oregon House, California (Yuba County APN#044-130-017) was an approximately 5-acre property owned by Tristan WINKS and that there were no residential structure on this property. I also verified through inquiries with the DMV and other databases that, despite owning this property, WINKS consistently provided resident addresses primarily in Nevada County and previously in Oregon House, though not in close proximity to 8146 Sunnyside Lane. I then examined Google Earth Satellite photograph of 8146 Surmyside Lane in Oregon House. The satellite photograph were dated as having been taken in 2011. In the photograph, I observed that there appeared to have been a large outdoor marijuana garden on the property. I noted that this photo showed a large clearing in the tree line along the south side of the property.

25. During August and September of 2012, I arranged for the DEA Airwing, the CHP, and the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department to all conduct aerial surveillance of 8146 Sunnyside Lane, Oregon House, California, and to video and photograph the property at various times, up through September 8, 2012. I examined the video and the photographs from this aerial surveillance and observed that there were ongoing outdoor marijuana gardens in clearings along the south side of the property. The location of the current marijuana gardens is very similar to the gardens captured in by satellite imagery in 2011.

26. During August and September of 2012, I arranged for the DEA Airwing, the CHP, and the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department to all conduct aerial surveillance of 8146 Sunnyside Lane in Oregon House, and to video and photograph the property at various times, up through Septembr 8, 2012. I examined the video and the photographs from this aerial surveillance and observed there were ongoing outdoor marijuana gardens in clearings along the south side of the property. The current gardens are very similar to the gardens captured by satellite imagery in 2011.

27. I learned through multiple database inquiries, property records and inquiries with Parcel Quest (a commercial database which provides assessors maps, satellite boundary lines for parcels and accompanying property records) that the Fellowship of Friends (Fellowship of Friends) property which encompassed a large vineyard area, olive groves, and multi-use buildings along the east side of the 12000 block of Rices Crossing Road south of Oregon House was actually numerous (over ten) contiguous parcels, all of various sizes, encompassing a block of land running from the main entrance north and east up the slopes of the vineyard hillside into subsequently wooded areas above the vineyard. I also observed that there were several ponds, fire roads and trails running throughout these parcels which, altogether, appeared to be over 1700 acres of land. I examined the Google Earth Satellite photographs from 2011 which documented the Fellowship of Friends properties and parcels described above. While I was examining these photographs, I observed numerous obvious outdoor marijuana gardens on properties bordering the large 238-acre Fellowship of Friends owned parcel (Yuba County APN#048-170-068) along the north side of the vineyard area which was primarily wooded and pasture land with an access road running from the vineyard past a holding pond up to where Dixon Hill Road and Candlewood Road meet.

28. While examining the 2011 satellite photographs of Yuba County APN#048-170-068, I observed a large outdoor marijuana garden which appeared to be located just north of the holding pond on this parcel and west of the access road running through this area. I observed that the plants in the area appeared in close proximity to an apparent residential structure which was accessed from a driveway I verified through ground surveillance was accessed by a gate at 13233 Dixon Hill Road, Dobbins, California (Yuba County APN#048-170-041), a 5-acre property, and that this access road ran south through that property and later bent to the east in the direction of the house, and that the marijuana garden was just east and south of this structure. However, utilizing Parcel Quest satellite photographs and assessors maps, it appeared that the marijuana

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 10 of 27

garden was located on Yuba County APN#048-170-068, which bordered the 13233 Dixon Hill Road property. I noted that the CS had stated that Fellowship of Friends members had, in years past, grown marijuana on the Fellowship of Friends property in this same area, e.g. the wooded area on the hill north of the current vineyards.

29. On September 8, 2012, Yuba County Deputy Heath conducted aerial surveillance of Yuba County APN#048-170-068 and Yuba County APN#048-170-041 (13233 Dixon Hill Road, Dobbins, California). Deputy Heath observed outdoor marijuana gardens in this same area. I examined the photographs from this aerial surveillance and observed that there were ongoing outdoor marijuana gardens in clearings in basically the same areas as those documented the previous year by satellite imagery described above. I observed that it appeared that there were marijuana plants in close proximity to the residence structure as well as to the south and west, an area I know from the assessors maps to be the Fellowship of Friends parcel Yuba County APN#048-170-068.

30. I learned that 13233 Dixon Hill Road, Dobbins, California (Yuba County APN#048-l70-04l) was listed as being owned by Ronald V. CARROLL and Susan A. CARROLL of 30384 Crowley Drive, Ocean View, DE. Property records revealed that these individuals apparently own numerous properties (over ten listings) in Delaware, Maryland, Hawaii, and California.

Training and Experience Regarding Drug Trafficking and Drug Traffickers

31. As a result of my experience and training, I have learned that traffickers who deal in various quantities of controlled substances, or those that assist in that venture, maintain and tend to retain accounts or records of those transactions. Such records detail amounts outstanding, owed, or expended, along with records tending to indicate the identity of co-conspirators. These records may be kept on paper or contained in memory calculators or computers. It is also my experience that these traffickers tend to keep these accounts and records in their residence and in the areas under their control. It is my training and experience, that in the case of drug dealers, evidence is likely to be found where the dealers live. United States v. Angulo-Lopez, 791 F.2d 1394, 1399 (9th Cir. 1986). It is also my training and experience that where criminal activity is long-term or ongoing, equipment and records of the crime will be kept for some period of time. United States v. Greany, 929 F.2d 523, 525 (9th Cir. 1991).

32. Based upon my experience and training, I have learned that drug traffickers often place their assets in names other than their own to avoid detection of those assets by
law enforcement and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); that those persons are commonly family members, friends, and associates who accept title of assets to avoid discovery and detection; that traffickers also often place assets in the ownership of corporate entities to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies and although these assets are in other individual(s) or corporate names, the traffickers continue to use these assets and exercise dominion and control over them. Typically traffickers keep records of those registrations and transactions in their residence.

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 11 of 27

33. I have learned that large-scale drug traffickers often have on hand large amounts of United States currency in order to maintain and finance their ongoing business. It has been my experience that drug traffickers often keep large sums of currency, caches of drugs, financial instruments, precious metals, jewelry, automobiles and other items of value and/or proceeds of drug transactions, including evidence of financial transactions related to obtaining, transferring, secreting or spending large stuns of money acquired from engaging in the acquisition and distribution of controlled substances in their residence or in the areas under their control.

34. In my experience, traffickers commonly have in their possession, that is, on their person, at their residence and in the areas under their control, firearms, including but not limited to handguns, pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, machine guns and other weapons. Such firearms are used to protect and secure a traffickers property. Such property may include, but is not limited to, narcotics and other dangerous drugs, jewelry, narcotic paraphernalia, books, records, ledgers and quantities of currency.

35. In my experience, traffickers commonly have in their possession, that is on their person, at their residences, and their vehicles, and in the areas under their control and which they have free and ready access to, narcotics, including but not limited to marijuana, which they intend to distribute. It is my experience that these drug traffickers commonly utilize these areas (vehicles, residences, properties, etc.) as locations to conceal their narcotics from law enforcement.

36. In my experience, drug traffickers may take or cause to be taken, photographs or videotapes of themselves, their associates, their property, and their product. Such traffickers often maintain photographs and/or videotapes at their residence or in the areas under their control.

37. In my experience, large scale traffickers often maintain in their possession and at their residence fictitious identification, including but not limited to, driver’s licenses, employment cards, insurance cards, social security cards, certificates of birth and passports which are obtained by the traffickers and utilized in an effort to prevent law enforcement identification of the traffickers and their drug trafficking activities.

38. In my experience, drug traffickers often utilize vehicles in which to transport and distribute controlled substances in facilitation of their trafficking activities. It has also been my experience that traffickers will also utilize vehicles as locations in which to store controlled substances prior to distribution. During prior investigations, I have observed that drug traffickers will often utilize vehicles registered in the names of individuals other then themselves in an effort to avoid detection by law enforcement. In addition, these traffickers tend to attempt to legitimize their assets by establishing domestic and foreign businesses, by creating shell corporations, by utilizing bank haven countries and attorneys specializing in drafting and establishing such entities

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 12 of 27

employed to “launder” the proceeds derived from the distribution of controlled substances.

40. In establishing these entities, the traffickers often must travel to meetings in foreign countries as well as domestically. As a result of that travel, records are generated reflecting travel by commercial and private aircraft, Commercial Ocean and private vessels as well as common carrier(s).

41. Individuals involved in the distribution of marijuana often make, or cause to be made, pictures, videos, movies, compact discs, floppy discs, or other such items which are or contain photographic or digital images in order to memorialize their marijuana distribution, use, possession, or any other activities surrounding their marijuana trafficking activities, and that such items often identify co-conspirators in their marijuana trafficking activities.

42. It has been my experience in the past that when suspects utilize mobile telephones to communicate with cooperating individuals or undercover agents to set up the marijuana deals, records relating to these activities will be found stored in the cellular telephone.

43. Further, as part of my training and experience, which has included participating in numerous investigations of clandestine marijuana cultivators as well as the execution of over one hundred search warrants with regards to the cultivation of marijuana, I have found that in addition to the location of marijuana in all various forms, including growing plants, harvested plants or stalks, or drying, dried, or processed marijuana, marijuana seeds and/or marijuana plant clones, there is a large amount of equipment and tools associated with and used for the cultivation (both outdoor and indoor), use, storage, or processing of marijuana, such as:

Irrigation devices, garden hoses, water buckets, five gallon buckets, ground timing devices, electronic watering devices, aerators, PVC pipe, water storage drums, water tanks, hose filter fittings, valves, water pumps, lights, timers, power packs, power cords, extension cords, generators, air conditioning units, fans, heat pumps, shovels, rakes, brush clearing equipment, handsaws, pruning shears, hand-held sprayers, in-line fertilizer/water tanks, herbicides, starter pots, planter pots, grow pots, alligator clips, baggies, rolling papers, cigarette packs, small medicine containers, glass and plastic vials, rolled up papers for holding seeds, sifters, scales and other weighing devices, drying screens, paper bags, pouches, backpacks, burlap bags, plastic storage containers; this equipment may include instructional books and/or magazines for growing marijuana, such as: High Times, Marijuana Growers Guides, Sinsemillia Tips, Marijuana Potency, Marijuana Botany, Marijuana, and other marijuana publications,.

44. I know that narcotics traffickers use mobile telephones to communicate with one another, either by voice or text message. Mobile telephones preserve in their memory

Case 2:12-sw-00645-KJN Document 1 Filed 10/10/12 Page 13 of 27

a history of incoming, outgoing, and missed calls, which can lead to evidence of the telephone numbers of other narcotics traffickers and the dates and times that they and/or the mobile telephone user dialed one another’s telephones. Mobile telephones also contain in their memory a telephone book. This allows the user to store telephone numbers and other contact information; the information stored in a telephone used by a narcotics trafficker is evidence of the associations of the narcotics trafficker, some of which are related to his or her illegal business. Mobile telephones also contain in their memory text messages sent, received, and drafted by the mobile telephone user. The text message history of a narcotics trafficker’s mobile telephone can contain evidence of narcotics trafficking because it shows the communications or planned communications of a narcotics trafficker and the telephone numbers of those with whom the narcotics trafficker communicated or intended to communicate. Mobile telephones also have a voicemail function that allows callers to leave messages when the telephone user does not answer. Narcotics traffickers sometimes leave voice messages for each other and this is evidence both of their mutual association and possibly their joint criminal activity. Mobile telephones
can also contain other user-entered data files such as “to-do” lists, which can provide evidence of crime when used by a narcotics trafficker. Mobile telephones can also contain photographic data files, which can be evidence of criminal activity when the user was a narcotics trafficker who took pictures of evidence of crime. Mobile telephone companies also store the data described in this paragraph on their own servers and associate the data with particular users’ mobile telephones.

45. The description of the parcels in Attachment A must take into account that each of the locations consists of rural and undeveloped land. Based upon law enforcement’s limited access to the large parcel described in this Affidavit, agents may encounter subdivisions of the parcels that cannot be anticipated. In this case, DEA and assisting law enforcement agencies were only to observe the parcel by conducting aerial surveillance of the properties identified in Attachment A. Agents have had to limit their observations of the parcel to aerial and limited physical surveillance in order to avoid being detected by the person or persons currently cultivating marijuana for further distribution at this time. If agents encounter unexpected structures on any of the parcels in Attachment A during execution of this warrant, I respectfully request authority to search for contraband and seize any such contraband located in any buildings or temporary structures discovered on any of the parcels during execution of this search warrant. United States v. Alexander, 761 F.2d 1294, 1300-01 (9th Cir. 1985).

46. As described above and in Attachment A, this Affidavit seeks permission to search and seize things that are related to the ongoing marijuana cultivation and marijuana distribution operation, in whatever form such things are stored. Based on my knowledge, training, and experience, I know that electronic devices can store information for long periods of time. Even when a user deletes information from a device, it can sometimes be recovered with forensics tools. Similarly, things that have been viewed via the Internet are typically stored for some period of time on the device. This information can sometimes be recovered with forensics tools.

#150 is brimful of information!

10. The CS stated that JEWERS owned the property at 9305 Sweetwater Trail, Oregon House, California. JEWERS previously made a living as a back-hoe operator.

a back-hoe operator? Let’s ask google to elucidate:

Backhoe Operator Job Description
By Cassie Damewood, eHow Contributor

Backhoe operators often work on undeveloped land sites.
A backhoe operator drives and manipulates the bucket of a backhoe to dig and move dirt, sand, gravel or a combination of these materials. He may also operate similar earth-moving or construction equipment as part of his job or have expertise exclusive to backhoes. His job may require coordinating excavation efforts with other drivers and operators, or he may work alone.

Ah, a back-hoe is what we call a JCB here in the uk. I don’t know about you but I am always full of admiration of the skills those guys display working those buckets right next to where pedestrians walk past, many stop of course to wonder at the skill the man has in manipulating the bucket with a couple of joy sticks under his hands. I wonder where a back-hoe operator practices to refine the skills he would need before anyone would hire him for real work?

Spycam in the Galleria: episode 2:

Let’s switch the device into super slow motion, and engage the quantum neural remote MRI scanner option to pick up the thoughts of the occupants of the room.

Focusing the quantum neuroscanner on the front attention sector of “i”‘s cortex.

T = 0 Burton is about to display himself to i:

i
“O my God he’s going to – O my God no, surely not – O my God he IS! O my God, O my God”

T = 1 sec

i
“Well there are Tantric traditions …”

“I will never say a word to ANYONE”

“O my God – what if Robert laughs about me later with his current puer delicatus, how mortifying!”

“WORK I – That humiliation is exactly why Robert is giving you this experience, there is no other way to deliver quite the same shock to your system, as sex has a molecular effect, working as it does with hydrogen 12”

T = 3 sec

i
“My experience is not vast, but that is small by any standards!”

“I can’t stop looking at it, I want to look away, but his spectral whisper ‘world 6 transforms my sex organs’ haunts my mind.”

T = 6 sec

i
“He did seem to hint that this would be a one off experience simply to allow me to know what the benefits are to his lovers, is there a way I can discreetly check that without offending him I wonder?”

In the next section let’s focus the neuroscanner on Burton. What will we find? What IS the inner Burton mental landscape whilst enacting a seduction procedure way outside his normal comfort zone?

Spycam in the Galleria: episode 3:

In episode 2 we detected many I’s flitting through the awareness of “I in the sky” as she desperately tries to come to terms with a dramatic alteration in the way her teacher is behaving towards her. But what is Burton thinking/feeling? He has initiated a high risk tactic, usually he seduces a young man who will have been groomed by his inner circle to regard him as beyond human moral law, and a man number 8, so they are set up for “anything goes” in the private areas of the Galleria. “I in the sky” has known him for 40 years, and is a wise old bird. She does a very useful job controlling the membership, arguing against the shoddy lies told about him on the blog, and leaving him free for conscious pursuits. He has exposed his penis to her, and she is showing signs of some distress, but is womanfully trying to hold her instinctive reactions in check. He knows from long experience that once he gets the person to take his penis in their mouth, he is home and dry. Let’s focus in to his front attention area.

rb
“One, two: unbuckle my shoe”

“Three four close that door”

“five six let’s have sex”

long Be.

– ineffable wisps of the ghosts of great humans swirl at the edge of his mind. O hang on, we are picking up a separate voice in there, sounds like a 15th century northern Italian accent to me.

“ROBERTO, ASK HER TO SHOW YOU HER LADY’S BOY BIT, SOMETIMES THEY CAN BE AS LONG AS A YOUNG BOY’S”

rb speaks: “Dear, C influence have indicated to me that we should both become naked, that will encourage an essence mingling. Clothes are from world 48 and are no longer needed in here”

Will “I in the sky” disrobe? How long is her ‘boy bit’. Is Leonardo really a pervert?

tune in to Spycam in the Galleria: episode 4 to find out.

Opus111 (#130-82 or thereabouts),
you quoted Joseph Nachumovitch in #73:
Anyone who was in the FoF for the right reasons didn’t care about the predictions, which is why so many students left because of them.
and then went on: “I disagree with you there. Predictions add to the FOF folklore in unfortunate ways (1998 preparation and aftermath) but they are a minor part of the core issues, IMHO.”

Thinking about “the core issues” stimulated me to start looking for a blog entry that I remembered, by “Deeply Disillusioned”, because it dealt with one of the core issues, that one joined the Fellowship of Friends because it was a ‘school’ where one could become ‘conscious’.
Here it is:

“Not one.”
That’s the phrase that keeps ringing through my mind.
You see, everything we saw was to be justified by the fact that we were a school for creating conscious beings, whatever one of those might be. The creation of a conscious being was such a signal event in the history of mankind that it justified the corruption, the “fallen soldiers” along the way, and the crazed power trips we saw among the leadership. It exonerated everything we ourselves were doing and what we tolerated around us. It justified the broken hearts, broken marriages, broken families, and broken friendships.

But there were no conscious beings. Not one. So that means there was nothing to justify what happened among us, no great offsetting benefits. Instead, we are left with our complicity – our complicity with those who had breakdowns and were taken away, the children who were neglected or shipped off to be raised with others, the spouses who were divorced because they never joined or left the Fellowship or simply weren’t up to the speed of our accelerated evolution, the parents who died without a visit from us because, after all, that’s how Robert behaved when his mother died. And of course, for the debauching of the young men recruited for the “Inner Circle.”

(original at: http://tinyurl.com/c24g5we)
_____________________________
I’m going to editorialize here. I can’t tell exactly where Deeply Disillusioned is coming from, but IMHO the idea so prevalent in the Fellowship that the production of ‘conscious beings’ is possible under the illusion that “the ends justifies the means” is quite wrong. You can’t separate the means from the ends, in fact the means shapes the ends. Corrupt means produces corrupted ends, period.

What a horrible realization it is for people who trusted Burton to find that the whole setup, all the sacrifices, all the time and money spent, were for a charade whose whole purpose was to gratify the literally insatiable appetites and self-glorification of the grand imposter, the God-Emperor of Oregon House, Robert Earl Burton.

I’m one of the lurkers. I don’t post much because I left 28 years ago, and I didn’t learn the worst until after I left. There are insightful writers here who have more recent and more direct experience to draw from.

I still find value in reading because I’ve seen how much there really was/is to unravel and sort out from my seven years in this cult. Coming to an honest understanding of what, in me, allowed this experience to go on for that long has been beyond valuable.

It would certainly have been easier to ignore the blog and move on without the messy introspection, but the scab was there and needed to be picked.

At this point, I’m mainly grateful for the important public service the blog provides. If my lurking hits help keep it visible, I’ll keep on lurking and saying something every once in awhile.

Thanks all!!

167. Ames Gilbert - October 18, 2012

Dear Mr. Blog Moderator,
first, thank you again for your work over so many years. I appreciate the time and energy it takes.

Secondly, a suggestion:
I see at the Spanish site mentioned in the post just above that they have a “Google Translate” tool. I tried it out, and though it is not perfect by any means, one gets a good idea of what is going on. Tim Campion’s site provides the same service as well.
It seems Google has made this possible and easy for any website:
http://translate.google.com/manager/?hl=en

I suggest you consider adding the Google Translate tool to this blog also. It will make the contents more widely available to Eastern European and Asian readers who may not speak English well or at all, and nowadays they are the primary source of recruits to the cult known as The Fellowship of Friends and hence to Burton’s harem.

168. Opus111 - October 18, 2012

A little more of the subject of prediction and disillusion:

I think a number of us bought into the idea of becoming better people and perhaps, as a group, promoting a better society, a better world. While those ideals are perhaps very naive, they resonate in most young people’s hearts, even today. It was easy and in fact thrilling to be part of a group of people with common aspirations, diverse background and intelligence and boundless energy. That our ideals, intelligence and energy were hijacked by Mr. Burton and mangled into ridiculous pronouncements and predictions was painful to witness.

It is not so much that the predictions became a core issue for many of us, rather we realized that Mr. Burton has no ideal, does not care one bit about society or the world, only his own needs. In fact, he does not seem to care much about his followers, only about those that fill his cup. Members are not students of the fourth way or seekers of their own spiritual development, they are “his students”, ergo expected to behave in any which way he decides at any moment of his own precious life. His needs are divine, fulfilling them his, and his followers’, religion.

169. Golden Veil - October 18, 2012

Thank you, Kathleen, for chiming in. I joined the year that you left!
I was in a very small European center, so I had at first no connection to Robert Burton except for hearsay from the center directors and by reading the meeting angles that had been printed on an antique printing press in Oregon House and illustrated with a color plate of an Old Master art work… I’ll probably always have mixed feelings about my time spent with the small group of students, the “friends” who were kind but also judgmental and repressive.

I know that I’m still vulnerable to being attracted to the beautiful, charming, special feeling, and mysterious. But I’m more cautious now and most importantly, I forgive myself for being part of what
now appears to be just a grand charade that hides real danger
and ugliness.

“156. Joseph Nachumovitch – October 17, 2012

Joseph, how quaint and how insipid.

Robert Burton has been proudly flippant towards the rule of law ever since he started the FOF and declared that he, and it, are above “life people” and not subject to their laws.

This is not 1970, when the cultural transformation of the 1960’s left many nontraditional, yet sincere, religious groups established in our country.

The people of the United States are still very tolerant towards honest religious organizations of all kinds, but not dishonest charlatans who use religion as a front for criminal activity.

In my opinion Robert Burton is just such a charlatan and the FOF is nothing more than a front for criminal activity.

Let’s see if Burton’s “44 angels” can pull his sorry “goddess” ass out of this one. I think not. My money’s on Uncle Sam and the DEA.

Ames and Moderator,

People who use the Chrome browser will receive a “Translate this page” message near the top of the screen if they navigate to a page in a different language.

So if your browswer is set for English, and you open a page in French, you’ll receive the following message at the very top of the page:

This page is in French. Would you like to translate it? [Translate] [Nope]

If you live in Spain, for example, your Chrome browser will be set for Spanish. When you open this blog page, you’ll receive the following message:

Esta página está en Inglés. ¿Quieres traducirla? [Traducir] [Nope]

There are some amazing tools on the Internet for translating content. Another option is simply to go to http://translate.google.com, and copy and paste:

Here’s a translated passage from this page:

My question is whether or not Google searches in other countries for “Fellowship of Friends”, “Pathway to Presence,” and so forth, will show the blog or not, since the blog is not published in other languages. But people should be aware that everything written here is accessible in dozens of other languages throughout the world.

176. Deeply Disillusioned - October 19, 2012

Hello Ames. Yes, I’m one of the lurkers, too – at least occasionally.

But you didn’t quote the last part of my post, way back in February 2007:

“Bedouin is right, of course. ‘They’ did not do this to ‘us’ – in fact, we all did it to each other. Everyone who placed bookmarks, attended prospective student meetings, directed a center, counseled others who were having doubts to stay, kowtowed to alleged ‘older students,’ led meetings, and cut off our friends as they finally left – and that pretty much includes all of us – bears some responsibility for the organization and it’s effects on people’s lives. Individual responsibility? Sure. But you are not an ‘innocent’ if you saw the robbery take place and walked away. We are all, jointly, responsible for what we saw – and for what we averted our faces from.

“Now, as more and more people are becoming aware of the failed promise of higher beings emerging among us, not to mention a ‘new civilization,’ we are using a new buffer, the equivalent of Dodo’s verdict in Alice in Wonderland’s Caucus Race: ‘All have won, and all shall have prizes!’ The reasoning: It’s not important whether anyone is conscious as long as we are all a little bit more conscious. But, after all, if I were going to a school for learning the violin – wouldn’t you expect to see someone graduating who was a musician? Wouldn’t it say something about the school that no one successfully learned to play? Especially when you saw the star pupils played clumsily and off-key, and couldn’t read music. Or if you were told, after learning only learning two notes a year under this system, ‘See? Don’t you know more music than you did a year ago?’ Yes, true. But wouldn’t you be suspicious of that reasoning, knowing that you’ll never learn to play that way?

“Towards the end of his life, Ouspensky said of the System, ‘We tried it, and found it not to work.’ Maybe there wasn’t any hidden meaning. Maybe he knew what he was about and meant what he said.”

Ames, my story has a happy ending. I left a few months after that post.

177. nigel - October 19, 2012

Maybe this little article will ‘shed some light’ on what is meant by consciousness. I am particularly impressed by the reference to ‘intuition versus inflation’. I feel Burton has been very much overtaken by the latter…..Nigel.

The sixth chakra is located in the forehead. It’s energy is light. It’s color is often seen as indigo. And interestingly enough the Sanskrit word for this center is called ‘Agna’ or the ‘command post’. And this is very significant for it insinuates that the ‘command center’ – the director of our drama – is not in the power center. It’s not in the emotional center. It’s coming from a very high source – the intuitive center – which is what the sixth chakra is about. Note the sixth chakra has more often than not been discussed in very occult ways as place for super-consciousness, visions, clairvoyance and clair-audience. And that may be well and good, but for your life’s work it’s helpful to understand this as a flow of the intuitive cosmic intelligence that is not occult at all, but maybe very natural.

For example, I often ask groups: have you ever had a time in your life when mysteriously or in some way that you could not understand some force came in and guided you, helped you make the right decision, pointed you the right way, helped you out of danger? And generally a large majority of people raise their hand and said ‘yes’. So this is not a hidden secret experience, it is something that most people at one point or another in their life have had happen to them! But then I ask a question: “How many of you felt this was extraordinary?” And again the majority of people raise their hand. Now, what if this experience was not extraordinary at all? But what if this is the way it’s supposed to be? What if you are actually aligned to the intuitive flow direct perceptions available to you 24 hours a day? This is a possibility of the sixth chakra.

To perceive and be open to dimensions of experience that are often invisible to people not because they are so high and mighty, but because most of the time we’re just too busy. You see, we live in a culture that is vibrating primarily on the first three chakras. Occasionally we move into a heart energy. Occasionally we move into a creative energy. But the opening of a direct intuitive intelligence is something that is neither taught nor supported in popular culture. Therefore it is thought to be fantastic.

The vocational issue around the opening of this ‘command center’, if you will, is intuition on one side and inflation on the other side. You see, you may have a fantastic revelation, a fantastic opening (and that is a beauty of the sixth chakra) but then when you begin to think that “Oh! I must be special” or “If everybody did this in this way they may have this” – you move into the inflated side of the sixth chakra. And it can get very very heady when the person begins to experience what Henry Davis Toro called “the higher laws”. That’s why it is so important that we work from the bottom up, that we have a strong ground, that our feelings are open, that our power center is clear, that we are working towards contributions, and so on and so forth.

So, what we want to do is open to the higher laws. Not to be someone special, not to move out of the world, but literally as if you are reeling a kite in from the sky to bring them down into the market place. Because the market place is the great democratic leveler of everything. If you can bring your intuition, if you can bring your inspiration into the market place – then you’re sharing it with other people. That is your life’s work. When you’re inflated – you shy away from the market place, you want to keep things secret. Because then your self-delusional bubble might burst. So the opening of the sixth chakra has to do with the opening of intelligence, with the opening of intuition, with the opening to guidance from sources that we cannot fathom, but that we can experience and work with on a daily basis.

After all in the last twenty years we have seen remarkable healing of all sorts – through healers, through assemblies, through groups, through prayer. We have seen a power of spirit cure cancer, leukemia, diabetes, we have all seen incredible transformations. Well, if the power of spirit can do this then the same power should be able to get me a job. This is “bring it down home”. And this is very important: this work is a work of alignment – it’s not a work of escape. The whole purpose of creating the work you love and moving into our life’s work is to bring the heaven and the earth together. To bring the intuition and a practical together and to take that deep intelligence and apply it to day-to-day situations.

So we ask in the sixth chakra that we can open to the unknown and bring into the known. And that will generally guard us and guide us against the inflated delusional position.

180. Avenging Angel – October 19, 2012

“Honest religious organizations?” I’m not Ames, but in answer I would first of all say that there is a great amount freedom to worship however one wishes to in the United States. Sometimes churches, temples, and schools are attacked, of course, by crazy people with guns, and sometimes a majority of citizens is not welcoming to the building of an unfamiliar sacred building in their community, but for the most part, “officially” all are welcome here. “Honest” may be somewhat of a misnomer in fact, to label a religion… to each their own truth! But, I don’t think that to define a religious organization as criminal or dishonest is an unfair description if the religious organization gathers donations from it’s followers to support someone that is a sexually perverted sociopathic narcissist and specifically pimp handsome young heterosexual male students for him with the intention of putting them in his clutches. Presenting the organization as one thing, for example a “Fourth Way esoteric school” or a school that honors and studies the philosophy of many ancient spiritual traditions, but then presents these ideas through the filtered interpretation of a deluded leader is not “honest.” Money laundering, dishonest immigration visas, dishonest marriages, federal tax evasion… these are all criminal activity. If the religious organization does not do the above, then I suppose you could say they were fairly “honest.”

Hi Deeply Disillusioned (#130-176 or thereabouts),
nice to have you here, and thanks for completing the rest of the post I quoted from. I should have made it clearer that it was only a part, though I did give the link to the actual post so people could get the context. And I’m so glad you are free.

Freeman, (#130-171 or thereabouts),
my machine is too out of date to use the Chrome browser (pre-Intel Mac), so I couldn’t test the translate feature you mentioned. For me, it takes at least seven steps to get an article into Google Translate so it can do its thing. I suggested that the moderator install the Google Translate button so any one on any browser could translate the entire page in just one step, making it more likely IMO that it would be used.

The official Fellowship of Friends website (http://www.livingpresence.com) offers Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, French, German, Italian and Romanian. I’m sure that the translations were done by bi-lingual followers, so they are accurate and colloquial. If there is a ‘one-stop’ method of translating into the 60-odd languages Google claims, we can more easily reach most of the non-English speakers who arrive on this site, even if some colloquialisms do translate badly.
I looked over the ‘Russian site’ in the blogroll at the top of each page. There is actually very little there specifically warning about Burton and the Fellowship of Friends, so again I think it would be a real service to make it as easy as possible to translate this blog.

I leave dear readers with a couple of juicy Burton quotes to mull over:
February 6, 2005
“The crocodile was intentionally created by higher forces to embody the attributes of the king of clubs. It is a grotesque creature, exactly the opposite of essence and higher centers. (…) All crocodiles are alike, and all think they are different. It is astonishing to cohabit with such a creature.”

(In reference to a picture of a man in Poldi Pezzoli Museum, receiving divine inspiration)
“People flatter themselves in thinking they are inspired from above.”

—Even Burton is right about something from time to time, purely by accident!
